The Ape-ple of Mom's Eye Tries Out His Tootsies

Bristol Zoo's Gorilla Island has a new (adorable!) occupant striding its shores. Little Kukena ventured out with mom Salome over the weekend and took his first steps in the big, big world. A 7-month-old Western Lowland gorilla, Kukena is part of an international conservation breeding program for this critically endangered species.

S.W.A.K.: Seals Want a Kiss

2012 got off to a rocky start for about 60 seals, battered by storms in the U.K. After enduring rough weather, in which winds reached up to 100 miles per hour, these pups were rescued by the Royal Society For the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals for some R&R before they are released back into the wild this Spring. Despite the recent trauma, these grey seals still have a smooch or two for the camera, and we're happy to take in the cuteness!

Polar Bear Siku Guzzles Milk and Melts Hearts

The loss of Knut the polar bear last year left a trail of broken hearts among animal lovers worldwide. Thankfully, the good people at the Scandinavian Wildlife Park in Denmark have brought us Siku, and our hearts are once again replete. At just 49 days old, the orphaned baby polar is already an Internet sensation, simply for sucking on a bottle and passing out in a food coma. But so long as this little guy is willing to feast and snooze for us, we won't complain!

Iceland is home to a variety of animals that you don't see every day: puffins, reindeer, tiny horses, and seals. If you ever make it to breathtakingly beautiful Jökulsárlón, the island's largest glacial lagoon, head to the southern side of the water. There, a colony of a few dozen seals will inquisitively observe your every move. These guys (and ladies) came within 15 feet of the shore, only to dive underwater as soon as they knew I was on to them. Aside from the occasional sound of ice breaking apart, it was just me and the barking seals - a total one-with-nature morning. Check them out to see why I'm still laughing over their little faces.
