Our youngest office pet, Samson, is in the running for the Worldwide Fido Awards (he's in the "cutest" category, naturally) and his mom has been proudly sending his adoro home video around to all her friends and family.
Clearly, just being nominated is an honor, but we all sincerely hope he will win and beat out the pretty fierce (and adorable!) competitors to become a world-famous pup.
In the mean time, we're keeping our fingers and paws crossed.

North may like to play in the waves, but these brave pups surf them! Dogs of all sizes competed in the Fourth Annual Lowes Coronado Bay Surfing Competition in San Diego this weekend. And even though it was raining in SoCal, hundreds of people turned out to watch the sporty pups ride their surfboards.

I invaded the 2008 World's Ugliest Dog Competition on Friday, and what a whirlwind day it was! It was scorching hot in Petaluma, California, but I braved the heat and, not only got a chance to see the show live, but made friends with a cow, sat in on a sheep show, and, of course, met the World's Ugliest Dog face-to-snout. Take a peek into my day at the Sonoma-Marin Fair, and behind the scenes at the World's Ugliest Dog Competition!

I had a great time making new furry – and not so furry – friends at the 2008 World's Ugliest Dog Competition. While up in Petaluma, I witnessed spraying bottles, dabbing with damp towels, and plenty of other owners trying to keep their pets cool in the 95-degree heat. While I chatted with the super-sweet Heather Peoples (who came all the way from Phoenix with her husband and Xoloitzcuintle, Reggie), I got to hold Archie, who had his moment in the sun as World's Ugliest Dog from 2006!Since many of the doggies were short-haired or hairless breeds, I was curious how to keep these pets safe in the scorching sun .

Everyone was clamoring to chat Elwood up at this year's World's Ugliest Dog Competition! Now, maybe it was his bling-y collar, his trademark dangling tongue – it hangs out because he's got no teeth on the bottom left side of his mouth –, or because this was the reigning champion, 2007 World's Ugliest Dog. I caught up with Karen Quigley and her rescue pooch before the show started; coming all the way from New Jersey, the doggie's been quite busy in his year on top!

I loved chatting with the charming contestants – and their peculiar pets – at the 2008 World's Ugliest Dog Competition. I was so excited to see the pooches that I nearly forgot all the other fair fun! From ferris wheels to funnel cake, there were plenty of things to keep me occupied 'til showtime.

All the way from St. Petersburg, Florida, Gus captured the title – and my heart – when he won the 20th Annual World's Ugliest Dog Competition. The three-legged, one-eyed pup with cancer has a true tale of triumph – Jeanenne Teed and daughter Janey plan to use his award money of $1,600 (that's $100 for being a finalist for the purebred category, $500 for winning the Ugliest Dog of 2008 at the Sonoma-Marin Fair, and $1,000 for being the "2008 World's Ugliest Dog") towards his radiation treatments. In addition to the money, he got two trophies, one taller than his owners – I've got no clue how they'll get those back to the Sunshine state!

I learned quite a bit at the Ugliest Dog Contest — like "beauty is in the eye of the beholder," and that one of the competitors admittedly hops in the shower with her semi-hairless dog. Although first wondering how and why that worked, I visualized trying to bathe a large pooch and imagined it'd be easier to hop into a tub or shower with the dog for a better grip, right? (Full disclaimer: North gets bathed in the sink.) What's your take on this?

I know, I know, Pabst is pretty darn cute to many of us (myself included). However, since this year's Ugliest Dog title included a modeling contract, maybe it's his interesting look that prompted the victory? After all, several of the winners in past years have been Chinese Cresteds .
