I've tried three different collars and two harnesses before settling into this, a pink nylon one with a plastic clip buckle, a green leather one from the AKC with the clip buckle, and a red leather belt type collar. None of them held up. The pink one was ragged and tearing easily, the green leather one slipped loose so easily that she could slip out of it after minutes, and she pulled the rivets out of the leather collar from pulling so hard.

We tried an "easy lead" harness - but instead of encouraging not to pull it ended up being more of a hassle and harming her. She had an orange harness that is good for runs, but you can't keep a harness on forever and a collar is more practical. We needed something for when she goes outside to do her stuff and general stuff. We didn't want it to slip or break easily. This is the perfect thing - it's so incredibly adorable (all their collars are) and the nylon is durable. The plastic grips into the nylon to prevent slipping. We get a lot of compliments on the collar and leash - it's stylish - but it's also affordable and durable.

Lucky dog! First pooch Bo has a rotation of enviable leashes and collars - not only does he ♡ Obama but now he's showing off his true colors of red, white, and blue with a starry leash.
A White House staffer took the Portuguese Water Dog for a stroll around the South Lawn on Oct. 31 and I zoomed right in to find a pattern nearly identical. "Patriotic Stars" comes in collars (regular and martingale), harnesses or leashes in two lengths for $16 and up - are you getting stars in your eyes, too?

Hand-Dyed Dog Collars For Just $35!

I first learned about Jon Wye during my chat with The Lazy Environmentalist - although they're best known for a line of leather belts, he also offers some super-unique doggie collars by FREDFRED. Priced at $35, the leather is 100 percent full grain (no composite here) and all designs are hand-dyed with numerous layers to get the rich hues and shades in each item. They've got a bunch of unique patterns and designs, but I've gotta go bananas - monkey see, monkey do. No matter what pattern you choose for your pup they're all coated with the same treatment that covers your car's leather upholstery. So no matter the messes he gets in, the pretty piece's protected.

Found! Matthew McConaughey's Dog Collar For BJ

While I'm not positive it's the exact model modeled by this cute pup (since the picture was too fuzzy to zoom), I can certainly see Matthew McConaughey picking out an eco-tastic collar like this one - it's constructed with yarns made from recycled plastics. Way to just keep livin'.

To The Rescue: Think Like Goldilocks When Picking Collars

At first glance, I though Chris Henchy was holding this pooch by a Martingale since there was so much excess material. But, when zooming it, it's clear that the Shields-Henchy pet has a rather large collar. Eeks!

While it's important to not be too tight (since that can irritate the skin, restrict breathing, or even cause hair loss in the area), attaching a loose collar can let pups slip away.

If you're in the market for a new one, here are some things to remember before you hit the stores:

Measure your dog first, especially if he's not shopping alongside you. Since collars should fit the dog's neck, use a tape measure to check the diameter a couple inches above his shoulder blades.

Get the rest when you read more.

Add two or three inches to your measurement and that's the collar size you want. Remember, it should never be able to slip over the pup's head.
Count the available holes. Don't buy a collar when only the last buckle fits the pet - it's better to have one that can be adjusted smaller and bigger than the size that just barely fits.

Trend Alert: Statement Necklaces For the Four-Legged Set

That's a Croc o' Collar, Three Ways

Lovely and luxurious, all of these neck pieces look pretty stylish to me. Granted, we're not the ones wearing it (but we are the ones buying) so, if your pooch likes texture, check out three alligator-inspired collars. Whether they're mock croc or the real thing, I'm not telling . . . but can you tell just by looking? There's hundreds of dollars of difference between them, so find out the prices when you read more.

On the left is a Ralph Lauren Alligator Collar. It's made from glossy Louisiana Alligator, includes a brass lock and key, . . . and comes with a price tag of $495. However, lucky you, it's on sale for $289 if your fat wallet needs some emptying.
In the middle is a pretty CB Collection for Chrome Bones Collar - It's normally $60 (now $50) but mock croc only for this number with a Swarvorski-studded charm.
On the right, is a bargain basement number that looks far from shabby. It's patent alligator-inspired pattern comes with a crystal bone shape - this Faux Crocodile Collar has a very real price tag of $9. I don't know about your tastes, but there's nothing wrong with a simple find for my pampered pal.

New Product Alert! Wonderdog Birdie

There's a new collar in town from Wonderdog – hello, little Birdie. No tweet tweeting here but your pup (who's naturally getting a new collar for his Spring collection) should go cuckoo for these three items.

Featuring blue birds, red birds or pink birds, I love the contrasting background colors for each, sure to pop on coats of all colors. My only complaint: no harnesses for my smooshy . . . but they've got matching leashes ($36) to make high-flying sets for all the collar-wearers out there.

Quick Tip Before Buckling Up . . .

Whether your furry friend rides in a belt harness or a car seat while on road trips, I wanted to point out a quick tip for safety. Even if you prefer collars for walking, don't clip these to a seat belt or car seat attachment.

Personally, I don't believe in traveling with an unsecured pet period and, under no circumstances, should you drive around with a restraining device attached to your dog's collar. (I don't need to give you the graphic visual, but I'm sure you can picture what happens if you slam on the brakes.) Next time you're ready to hit the road, stock a harness just in case or, invest in a special version that attaches straight to the car safety device from your walk time, too!
