Mrs. Moggs Does All the Chores You Don't Want To . . .

If only we all could be so lucky to have a cat like this! Meet Mrs. Moggs, star of a hysterical calendar, who seems to enjoy housework more than laying around licking her paws. I certainly hate chores and think this feline belongs on CasaSugar! See what duties she dutifully does when you start this slideshow. I hope Mr. Moggs and mini Moggs are appreciative. New Year of Gifts: Wild Calendars

Ever since I could tell May from June, my mom would let me choose a new calendar for Christmas each year. Not surprisingly, almost every time they featured some sort of animal. To kick off the month of January, here are some super-cute calendar ideas to add to your home or office. From monthly ones to those that feature adorable critters 365 days a year, it's a great way to have a furry friend put a quick smile on your face! I've collected some of my favorites in a widget below so read more to check them out.

On the Ball: Advent Tree-at For Pets

When I saw the Littlest Pet Shop Advent Calendar for kids on lilsugar, I was instantly motivated! Being a fairly crafty gal, I decided to make an advent calendar for my lil' guy, North. I stopped off at a hardware store after work for some creative inspiration and was actually able to conceptualize and make this calendar from items I purchased or had lying around my house. It was so easy to make that when I sat down to work at the beginning of last night's Gossip Girl episode, by the end, I was done! To make this advent calendar you will need the following items:

One sheet of posterboard
Green wrapping paper or cellophane (note: if you've got green posterboard, you can eliminate this step!)
Writing utensils: a pen or pencil and marker
Scissors
Tape
Glue gun or stapler
26 foil cupcake liners
25 yummy treats

To assemble it:

Fold a piece of posterboard in half lengthwise and draw a tree with the middle of it on the seam (so it opens to a mirror image).
Attach wrapping paper to the blank side with glue or tape, flip over, and cut out the tree shape.

Fold and flatten 25 silver cupcake liners in half and number from 1–25.
Seal the cupcake pockets with two drops of hot glue (or a stapler) leaving enough space to slide the treat inside later. If you're using small snacks, you can stick one in now and staple . . . but let glue dry completely before adding snacks if you are using the glue gun.
Attach the cupcake pockets to the tree shape with glue or staples.

Slide in one treat inside each little pocket.
Cut out a star shape from the remaining cupcake liner and tape to the top.
Cut out a trunk from the posterboard scraps and tape to the bottom.

Now you're ready to hang it up! Be quick about it - if you make this project on the floor as I did, your pets may try to sneak a sample!

Do You Celebrate Adoption Anniversaries, Birthdays, or Both?

Don't worry, this cute kitten just posed like that before his first trip home - he safely rode in the lap of one Sugar staffer who recently celebrated his adoption anniversary. This got me thinking: Even if you know your pet's exact birth date, do you honor the time you brought him home along with (or instead of) the day he entered the world? I'm all for as many celebrations as possible so I'm marking down Aug. 27 on my calendar so I can remember to honor it for North.

Pet Pic of the Day: Newton's Busy Life

Newton has quite the social calendar! When he's not in daycare, he's probably taking walks in the tall grass. Or you might find him jetting off on weekend trips to the Rocky Mountains, or vacationing in style in the city. Of course when he's not busy stealing shoes, he's playing with the big boys like Axel – a Great Dane cross. He's a big dog at heart you know.

Top 10 New Species

Each year the International Institute For Species Exploration announces a list of the Top 10 New Species for the preceding calendar year. Even though there are virtually thousands of new plant and animals found each year, an international committee of experts choose these 10 to help draw attention to biodiversity, the field of taxonomy, and the importance of natural history museums and botanical gardens in a fun-filled way. Happy Year of the Great Pointed Archer?

Fear not, everyone, I have not lost my mind, nor am I introducing more PetSugar-isms . . . I only wish I could take credit for this. Because today starts the Year of the Rat in the Chinese Lunar Calendar, I wanted to find a clever rodent-related morsel to share with all of you. You may remember my animated rats and mice quiz featuring many characters that were not exactly shown in a flattering light - I mean, even the word "rat" is used to describe sneaky, deceitful people.

Here's where the Great Pointed Archers come in. The creators of this website hope to replace the offensive word with this "untainted and beautiful" name to begin to repair centuries of disrespect and hatred. The website itself is pretty neat – you can play an Archer Dash game to find and consume delicious snacks (while avoiding the dangers of a city street) and even design your own ~~rat~~ Great Pointed Archer like I did! I think it's an admirable cause but, as a friend pointed out, if a rat runs across her foot in the subway station, she's not actually gonna cry out "Ewww, a Great Pointed Archer!" What about you?

No More Wars... Only Kittenwars

If the only wars were wars with kittens, the world would be a much softer place. But, don't be fooled, kittenwars can be just as lethal... on your free time. Here I am trying to work, and I keep getting sucked back in. (As soon as I finish posting, I'm going back for more fuzzy goodness.) Sometimes my battleplan is obvious and sometimes my strategy gets shifted, but I can always count on picking the cuter of two kitties to lighten up my day.

From the people who also bring us The Random Kitten Generator, The Daily Kitten, and Cat In Sinks, this brilliant website has expanded into postcards, calendars, and a book with other fun features like a "Kittenological Personality Test" and a "guide to getting maximum cuteness from your kitten." A shot of sweet straight to the heart – I've lost this fight.
