When your dog's outfield includes a water landing, you want to make sure your ball of choice not only floats but is visible for the catching and fetching. After all, the sport isn't fun when the game has to stop because the toy can't be located. The glow-in-the-dark (and in the daytime) Meteorlight ($10) uses an LED light to shine brightly in all surroundings.

If your pooch's waterbound this season, I've selected my seven favorite doggie lifejackets on the market now. Just like people need a P.F.D. (personal flotation device), don't let your dog be without his C.F.D.

Treats: don't leave home without them. But, if your travels bring you by water, the risk of soggy yums enters the dining scene. Even though undiscerning pooches will still gobble them up, it's not as pleasant for owners to find these smushed in a pocket or sticking to a purse.

This dog has definitely not gone off the deep end; in fact, he seems rather hesitant to even puppy paddle in the shallow looking water. However, what's a brainy pet to do when there's a ball in the horizon? The water looks pretty dingy so I can't say I blame him for this problem-solving technique — way to make a figurative splash while (not) making a literal one, smarty pooch!

I'm counting down the hours to Dog Day on the Bay! That's right, next Sunday we're boarding a big boat on a pet-friendly cruise around San Francisco. North's been all over the country, but he's only been on a ferry, never a swanky trip with a bow-wow buffet and "poop deck."

We wrapped up our travels in Hawaii with aquatic life, and I stumbled upon some great tips for choosing a whale-watching tour no matter where you are. First and foremost, please remember you are getting the lucky opportunity to spot these creatures in their natural environment and you should never do anything to put them in jeopardy. Before making the pick, ask yourself if the tour operators are putting the animal first and not making any promises (i.e., money-back guarantee) that could cause them to take unnecessary risks.
