The Results Are in: Top Dogs 2006

Remember taking tally of which pooches we thought would reign supreme when the final numbers came in from the American Kennel Club? Well, that time is now as here's the AKC ordered list of the top 10 most popular dog breeds in the country based on the number of those dogs registered in 2006. There's was some shaking up and I can't wait to learn about 2007! According to our votes on PetSugar, the list would be:

Labrador Retriever
Golden Retriever
Yorkshire Terrier
Dachshund
Shih Tzu
German Shepherd
Beagle
Boxer
Miniature Schnauzer
Poodle

We got the top dog right . . . but that's it! Check out the AKC's full list when you read more.

Although the biggest mover was the Yorkie, Labs held their top spot (as they have since 1991) and all the other breeds from last year still stuck it out in the top ten. As a special note to me (and North!), the AKC reports that "not since the Boston Terrier hit the top nearly 70 years ago has a small breed worked its way to such a high spot on the list.” There's always next year – I'm still hoping my lil' one can make a comeback, too!

The Results Are in: Most Popular Breed

While the American Kennel Club releases an ordered list of the top 10 most popular dog breeds based on the previous year's registered numbers, I decided to host my own informal survey here on PetSugar to see which pooch our readers picked as the most common. Choosing from the most popular dogs from 2006, you decided that this year's list toppers would be . . .

Labrador retrievers! Whether chocolate, yellow, or black, these perennial favorites topped the list last year . . . so they're a likely bet to once again reign supreme. If you haven't voted yet, don't forget to take your pick because I'll be comparing our final rankings to the official ones released by the AKC in January.

The Results Are in: Puppy of the Year

Many celebrities take time to fit a pooch (or pooches) into their busy schedules. Of the noteworthy furry additions this year, I asked you to pick your favorite new dog of 2007. The winner of the PetSugar readers' choice poll for the puppy you can't wait to see grow up in 2008 is . . .

Charlie! This little fella is likely keeping Amanda's other Cavalier King Charles Spaniel (and her whole family) company no doubt. While he looks a little camera-shy at the moment, he could definitely take lessons from older sis, Midge. What a cuddle-worthy ball of fur he is – I love his whole gallery . . . aww!

The Results Are in: Hottest Scratcher

I took tally of all you kitty (and design) lovers to see which cat scratcher had the top design this year. Natural materials were a big hit in 2007 especially corrugated cardboard. At this time, these two were tied for the most stylish and functional scratching "post" of the year. IMO, the Sweet Kitty Lounge is the sweetest of them all so, if I had another vote to break the tie, that's the one I'd pick. Regardless of the one you crave, all cats need scratchers so hopefully there were some happy cats on Christmas morning!

The Results Are in: Biggest Debate

The Results Are in: Best Twinsies

Although one can't be too certain whether these people resemble their pets, or these pets resemble their people; either way, these duos were doubly cute this year. As part of the Best of 2007 polls, I chose six celebs and their six pooches to face off in a cuteness duo. And the winner of the PetSugar readers' choice for best twinsies is . . .

Kelly Osbourne and her pug, Prudence! Perhaps it was the matching hoodies, and matching expressions that caused these two to get 29 percent of the votes - but they do match each other nicely. The somber-looking pair had some tough competition with Nicole Richie and Foxxy Cleopatra coming in close behind (bringing in 28 percent) and Drew Barrymore and Flossie rounding up third (with 22 percent).

The Results Are in: Most Miss Max

As an animal lover, I understand that pets are important fixtures in people's lives and, for those in the public eye, it's easy to see celebrities' bonds with the cute pets that share their homes and lives - and feel a connection to them as well. So, as part of our Best of 2007 coverage, I surveyed PetSugar readers to see which celebrity's pet you missed seeing, hearing, or reading about during 2007 and you said . . .

With half the votes, George Clooney's pot-bellied pig is the pet you missed the most last year! He lived to 18 (while being arthritic and partially blind), which is a ripe, old age for an animal weighing in at over 300 lbs. Rumored to be called "Max the Star" by George himself, this chubby fellow would squeal for his meal every morning and was truly treasured and pampered by his celebrity dad who considered the pet to be his longest relationship.

I think there have been some pretty interesting stories so far on PetSugar and, for Best of 2007 coverage, I suggested the stories I felt were the most peculiar – and let you vote on the quirkiest! And topping off the PetSugar readers' list for the most unique story is . . .

The Perpetual Pets! I must admit I totally agree with the consensus on this tally – it's a tad too morbid (and pricey) for my tastes, too!

Wouldn't we all love to have extra cash lying around? As part of the continuing Best of 2007 coverage, I asked you what you'd do if you had a million to spare. And over 70% of PetSugar readers would use that extra cash to . . .

Buy a Doggie Mansion! Starting at $10,500, these custom-build homes can be totally made-to-order for your pampered pal! Some of you said you'd still want to keep this home inside your own to give your pets a special getaway while others wanted to stay inside these swank pads, too! The big question would be whose turn is it to clean house now?

Next up in the Best of 2007 coverage, we took tally of our fave pet parent around. These celebrities are often shown demonstrating responsible pet care and known for being animal lovers, too! Of the choices provided, the winner of the PetSugar readers' choice for mom of the year is . . .

Rachel Bilson! I'll have to admit, not only is she a favorite of mine style-wise, lil' Thurman Murman is painfully cute. He's not pocket-sized, yet she often carries him – the pup must weigh at least 20 pounds so perhaps it doubles as a mini workout?! Rachel and this mop of shaggy, cuddly fun brought in 37% of the votes at posting time – congratulations R-Bils and Thurman Murman, too!
