Since we're rather temperate out in SF, North still enjoys his trips to Baker Beach . . . but stays far away from the now-chilly water save a few sniffs. When the temperatures drop in your neck of the woods, how do you alter your pup's fitness routine, be it shorter trips outdoors or active indoor alternatives?

If You Get Waterlogged, Prevent Mucky, Yucky Treats With This

Treats: don't leave home without them. But, if your travels bring you by water, the risk of soggy yums enters the dining scene. Even though undiscerning pooches will still gobble them up, it's not as pleasant for owners to find these smushed in a pocket or sticking to a purse. I know, 'cause I've been there.

Since boats and beaches can be wet and sandy, don't add in dirt to the equation with this simple trick. Use an empty and fully dried water bottle to store some tiny training treats (like these). Easy to find and less mess, toss the container in your bag and you're ready to set sail!

Do Your Dogs Do Their Business at the Beach?

All pets have baffling behavior of one kind or another but, until our weekend beach excursion, I'd totally forgotten North's peculiar propensity: He won't go potty on the sand!

My best guess is that the sand confuses him because the moment we get back to solid, paved ground, he promptly pees (and poos). For those of you lucky enough to have sandy spots nearby, what do your pets do . . . or not do when they get there?

Out and About: Connecticut's Bushy Point Beach

Before we start a new state tomorrow, I couldn't forget to finish up with Connecticut! The rocky Bushy Point Beach is part of Groton's Bluff Point State Park, and was designated a 'Coastal Reserve' in 1975. This special act of the Connecticut legislature established the area "for the purpose of preserving its native ecological associations, unique faunal and floral characteristics, geological features, and scenic qualities in a condition of undisturbed integrity". For visitors, this means you'll get to see over 800 acres of amazing displays of nature... but you'll have to get there without any motorized vehicles.

In addition to the plants and animals you can spot, it's also a great place to walk with your pooch from Sept. 16 to Apr. 14 or to check out the variety of nesting birds (like the piping plovers) during the rest of the year. With a permit, it's possible to ply for clams here in the bordering Poquonnock River so pooches can also watch (or hop in to help) those clammers, too. You'll have to work to make it to this rocky point, though – it's a mile walk out to this beach from the park so grab hiking boots, pooch, and let's go!

Sand Saviors Help Baby Turtles Find Their Way!

Each evening at dusk, you'll find people walking along Palm Beach Shores in Florida. It's not just because the ocean is pretty enough to warrant a daily visit, but they're looking for movement in sea turtle nests there. When volunteers locate an active nest, they lend helping hands to the leatherbacks and dig channels to create a clear pathway to water for the babies.

Umm, I'm definitely adding baby turtles to my growing list of cute animals . . . look at those lil feet scramble! Thanks runnergeek for alerting me to this cool video!

Out and About: Illinois' Chicago Park District

Welcome back to PetSugar's Out and About feature! After two weeks of holidays, we're starting up again in the midwest with the state of Illinois. Even though it's pretty chilly in Chicago at this time of year, pet owners still make the dog-friendly areas of the Chicago Park District full of life. With twelve official spots listed on their website, doggies need a permit and tag to play at all parks including hardtop hit, Wiggly Field, and warm-weather standout, Montrose Beach. The rules require all shots and vet visits be up to date, and a purchased seasonal tag ($5) that's valid from 1/1 to 12/31 with no sliding scale offered. While it's great that the city wants to keep pets safe, visitors must plan ahead to get this documentation for their pals to avoid a $500 fine!

Kristin's New Laguna b*tch

Yes, I'll admit it. I was a sucker for Laguna Beach last season. Who couldn't get enough of Kristin, LC and Stephen or Jessica and Jason? It was so bad it was good. Laguna Beach kicked off season 3 last night. So far, I am not sucked in. The fact that Jessica is even still on the show makes her look pathetic - let's forget the fact that she is dating junior Cameron and even he is too embarrassed to admit it. As for the rest of the gang, no one is as cute as LC or bitchy hot as Kristin. Does that mean I will stop watching, probably not, but will I make it to the season finale - jury is still out on that one.

As for Laguna's biggest star, Kristin Cavallari looks like she is replacing Brody with a typical Hollywood accessory pup. I think she'll be back with Brody once he gets some press off of hanging with Nicole Richie. I wonder what happens to the little pooch then. More pics of Kristin and her cute new pup so read more

Double Duty: Frisbees

For many a sporty pup, Frisbees are custom made for catching. Now, if you're just getting a pup into the game, or like to play some Ultimate yourself on a sunny park or beach day, chances are you've got some extra discs lying around.

So waste not, want not and make that toy do double duty. Personally, I love the idea of using this as a travel bowl - in a pinch, the plastic shape can act as a water holder for an impromptu drink. It's perfect for thirsty pups and even rinses itself clean to make it perfect for you, too.
