These Days, Soap is Going to the Dogs

Oh, honestly, I can't take the cuteness. Just look at how ridiculous these Clean & Slobber soaps are. I'm nearly incapacitated by their twee packaging, but I'll try to tell you about the product itself. Pop Ink's triple-milled soaps are packed with essential oils, and they have a lavender-and-verbena scent. But really, they could smell like Milk-Bonz and I'd still be cooing at these little '70s-style woofers. They're $18 for a set of four at Wishing Fish, and while these might cost a little more than a bar of Ivory, they'd make great "just because" gifts for the dogaholic in your life. Now Fido can have her Kiehl's bath goods and you'll have yours, too.

Bath Sack: Spoiled Sweet or Spoiled Rotten?

For those brave souls that want to bathe kitty on their own (and whose cats don't love water), this is the item for you! Here is where I will (grudgingly) admit that I saw their other product, the Cat Sack, on an episode of Girls Next Door when the groomer put the straightjacket-esque item on Bridget's grouchy Gizmo to brush his teeth.

While that item is best used by professionals, the Bath Sack can be purchased for your very own, in home use. There is no guarantee of what happens once kitty comes out of the sack . . . and also none that you will ever be able to get her into it a second time. So would you spring for the cash to try this yourself (about $20), shell out the dough and bring your pet to a professional, or assume kitty is clean enough on her own?

Who likes a smelly cat?! Certainly no one I know! While wrestling a cat into the tub sounds challenging to most kitty owners, there are many fancy gadgets out there to help you get the job done. Contrary to popular belief, not all animals hate baths! North even seems to enjoy his tub time every once in awhile, which is a big relief to a tired dog mommy! But if your pet is having some bath time anxiety issues, there are a few things that you can do to help ease your pets into loving the lather.

If your pet freaks out at the sight of the bathroom, try getting your pets in there more often. Start by playing in the hallway and slowly working your way in. Once they are mastering going in and out, feeding, play, and even bed time in the loo can help your pet become more comfy in the space, and not such a 'fraidy cat (or dog) to enter.

Getting into the tub without World War Three breaking out can be a difficult task, but making minor adjustments can pave the way to better times to come. Make sure the water is lukewarm - not too hot, not too cold. Puppies and kittens are especially sensitive to hot and cold, so make sure you take the time to test the water before attempting a bath. Putting a rubber mat or towel at the bottom of the tub will help keep your pet from slipping, creating yet another reason to fear the big white tub. Also, if the showerhead seems to make your pet want to head for the hills, try using a cup instead.
Bring toys into the mix. Who says that toys in the tub are only for babies!? Whatever makes your furry pal more confident while bathing should translate into more fun and less stress for the both of you.

I Need Your Help . . . Share Tips For At-Home Coat Clipping!

Temps are heating up and for long-haired pups, Summer means time for a new 'do. For long-haired breeds, shedding is year-round battle, and frequent baths and trims can help the problem . . . but costs add up. TeamSugar user Lynne writes in about her Golden Retriever:

Since I'm not an expert, can you provide any insight and tips on the best products, methods, and stylings to accomplish reducing his fur coat during the Summer? I already have a Furminator, but that takes a lot of time and I don't want to irritate his (pale) skin with too many strokes. I'm hoping I can use the clippers with a 1-2 inch guard but would like some further advice.

Several companies make at-home trimmer kits with DVDs, but I've never used any on my short-haired pup. Can anyone offer up some tips or product suggestions to help Lynne and Sonny out?

Although I like to think North is pretty neutral to bath time, his pals at Wag Hotel tell me he loved the hydromassage he got on his last stay. In an attempt to recreate that at home, I tested out the FURminator TubNub ($13) on my pooch. A rubbery tool with nubs to massage a pet, work in the shampoo, and stimulate hair follicles during bath time, North seemed to enjoy this easy massage and it left my other hand free to hold him steady.
