My favorite thing about going back to school was picking out a new backpack. However, ummm, I don't think my pet needs one. First off, North would probably chew through the sack to get his lunch out. And as ~~crazy~~ cute as this cat looks with a bag of her own, I can't imagine many kitty owners would spend the $25 on this . . . especially since most of your cats never leave home.

Bear with me here. I know most doggies aren't thinking about going back to school, but let's pretend your dog is getting ready for a big first day – either at a new daycare, playdate, or training class. I wouldn't want too much to interfere with North's playtime so I'm thinking a new collar or sleek tank would be in order, what do you think?

Mac is all dressed up - does he have somewhere to go? Frenchie mom cplast says he looks like he's ready for his first day of school, but I gotta tell ya, he's totally coming back home with his nice clothes all dirty! Puppy school can get pretty messy.

Reward Good Behavior Instead of Punishing the Bad

I know January's the beginning of the year, but for many lucky kids (pets are like our children, right?), September kicks off a whole new start. In honor of back to school, I'd like to add even more advice and tips from me – and all of you – to the site!
Do you have problems you want to work on? Submit them to my Pet Peeves group. I'll be tackling them as they come in . . . and even asking the rest of you to chime in as well. Just think of this as your own support group for your furry friends.

To start it off, I wanted to share a simple training trip I learned from Teresa (of Greatest American Dog):

We use positive reinforcement and clicker training a lot. When Leroy does something that I like, I click and treat. It's not necessarily food, I could use a ball or a frisbee as his treat. When he does things that I don't like, I redirect him to something else that he could be doing. So it's not 'no, no, no, no,' it's what else can I give you to do so you can't do the wrong thing . . . so you can get praised which leads to the right thing being repeated. I'm trying to get as many correct things out of him as possible.

Did You Have Class Pets As a Kid?

It's time to think back to your elementary school days – did you ever have a creature in class? My friend's school had an "office dog" that belonged to the principal . . . and I know if, I went there, I would have been trying to find excuses to go to the office! Remember that plotline from several sitcoms in years' past, child would take "pet" home, pet would meet its untimely end, and the frantic search for the replacement would begin. From official school pets to animals visiting with their owners, was this the case with you? As always if you remember the exact type – and name – of a school pet, don't forget to share in your comments below.

Been "Gifted" by a Pet?

I still remember being at a childhood friend's house in the country when her cat brought in a dead mouse and placed it at her little brother's feet. Because I must have been about six or seven at the time, I remember screaming and jumping on the couch, and recall the whole thing to be a tad traumatic. Now, flash forward many years later as I got a call tonight from a high school friend to tell me (as PetSugar) that her indoor/outdoor cat brought in a Koi from her pond and left it on her back stoop . . . she was a bit freaked out, shocked at the cat's ability and sudden hunting desire, but still handling herself rather well. I tried to offer moral support as she went through her options to (a) call her boyfriend; (b) close her eyes and remove it herself; or (c) ignore it and hope kitty decides to become doglike and digs a hole outside. We decided on the first option and she just called back to tell me that the situation has been taken care of. Now, North is likely too greedy to present anything to me, but I want to hear what your (insert pet here) brought in!
