Farm Animal Art: E-I-E-I-Ohhhhh!

I may not peruse the halls of the MoMA every weekend, but I can appreciate art when I see it. Especially when the subject is animals! Artist Federico Uribe was inspired by ordinary objects to make these amazing farm animal sculptures, which are now on display at a Colombian gallery.

Take this cow for example - made up of soles from hundreds of shoes, they were molded and shaped to look like grazing livestock. But Federico doesn't stop at footwear. He's using mops, belts, and office supplies to complete his work. Check out a few more examples in the gallery above!

Bring a Little Love to Your Walls With These Etsy Dog Prints

Just in time for someone's birthday this month (and by someone, I mean he's got four legs, is black and white, and goes by the name of North), I can give us both a b-day pressie and order one of these adorably original Boston Terrier art prints straight from Rubenacker's Etsy Shop to hang on my wall.

Good news for you non-Boston owners: Rubenacker doesn't only craft Boston Terrier prints (there are some other smooshies making an appearance, as well as a number of other breeds), although I happen to be a little partial, naturally. Ranging in price from $11 to over $100 dollars, there is something for everyone. I have picked out a few of my favorites from the "Boston's in Hats" series, mostly cause he has nailed the dog-with-a-hat-on expression so well - embarrassment with a little touch of annoyance tossed in for flavor.

Bare Bones: Mod Dog Art

I know I'm totally obsessed with pets when I start looking for animal art to add to my walls! Although, I've been having a hard time finding something that matches my taste, since I'm not really into the whole kitties-playing-with-yarn-and-flowers scene. When I came across Mod Dog's awesome breed prints, I knew I hit the jackpot. I just finished hanging mine – the Boston Terrier, naturally – and I couldn't be happier! Mod Dog prints are not only cute and a great conversation piece for your home, but are eco-friendly to boot – printed on a 100 percent cotton canvas with non-toxic inks.

You can get your favorite breed in a number of colors and sizes from $25-$65 bucks, which seems pretty affordable, since cool animal art is pretty hard to come by. I'm so in love, I might even add more breeds to the family . . . in printed form, of course.

Not Exactly Pets: Steel Animals

It's always fun to "stumble" across something on the web that catches your eye, like these steel animals from designer Edouard Martinet.

Based in France, Edouard makes these crazy pieces out of junkyard finds, turning them into beautiful works of art. I especially like the frog pictured here but am pretty keen on the shrimp as well! Additionally, it looks like these pieces are a lot bigger than they seem in these photos and could really serve as cool yard art . . . and possibly freak out your dog in the process!

Memories of Sophie and Gracie: Controversial Artist Dedicates Sculpture to Oprah's Deceased Dogs

When I first saw this, it took a couple minutes before I could even say anything. You're looking at a life-size monument depicting deceased pups, Gracie and Sophie, atop the head of Oprah Winfrey. Called "Memories of Sophie and Gracie: A Puppies' Memorial," the sculpture was designed by Daniel Edwards. Now his name sounded familiar to me, but I couldn't quite place it, so I googled him up – lo and behold, he's the same controversial sculptor who created that statue of Britney Spears giving birth on the bearskin rug. If you're interested in checking it out up close, it will be displayed at NYC's Leo Kesting Gallery from May 22 - June 8. Learn a little more about the reasoning behind this sculpture when you read more.

"To represent Sophie and Gracie together, joined in Oprah’s memory as they were in life and in Oprah’s heart, the artist depicted them as conjoined at the hip and sharing a common tail,” says co-director John Leo. The dogs are shown standing on the flowing-maned golden likeness of Oprah’s head, in reference to how the dogs’ deaths may be weighing heavily on Winfrey’s mind. “Losing two beloved pets within a year is likely to take its toll on anybody.”

While the artist says his intentions were to draw attention to the overlooked threat of accidental pet fatality from not pet proofing a home (Gracie choked on a ball), it's still a tad too morbid for my tastes – what do you think?

Wild Art: Shielding Cats and Mice . . . From Each Other?

Although Canadian artist Jeff de Boer earned his degree in jewelry design, I'm most interested in his other passion - making suits of armor for mice, cats, and people, too. In the fall of 1986, he used his professional training and skills picked up from his dad (a tinsmith), to create what's likely the first (and only) suit of armor for a squeaker. In the past he's had solo exhibitions of over 140 original objects, a full-color book of his art, and various other accolades. However, because much of this happened back before the era of Google, I'm just finding out about this guy now. Jeff continues to release his wild art, like the "Samurai Cat," created just last year. Meowza! His mini suits of armor are so detailed that I couldn't resist making a gallery of my faves. Don't worry, animal activists - they're just for show so check out the works when you read more.

Gigantic Puppy in Bloom Now!

When I spotted this photo yesterday, I didn't even notice the caption because I was so distracted by what looked like a huge Chia Pet! A bit of research uncovered the story behind "Puppy" and, even though the news here was the Spanish Deputy PM and others heading to a socialist party meeting for the general elections, I was a bit more interested in the story behind that giant westie! I've collected photos of the five locations (along with a bit more information) to create this slideshow for you! Source

Out and About: Ohio's Wegman Exhibit at the Wexner

While you may know him for his iconic Weimaraner photos, William Wegman: Funney/Strange is 40-year retrospective of much of his painting, collage, video, and, of course, that amusing dog photography! With stops in New York, DC, Florida, and Massachusetts, it has been in Columbus since late September and will conclude its national tour here in the Midwest. This exhibition is located at the Wexner Center for the Arts and features a special project by this "inveterate jokester" in the lobby. If you're in the area (or traveling here for the holidays), catch it before it leaves on Dec. 30.
