Pet Airways Makes First Flights Today: Are You Buying In?

No people allowed, people. That's the policy on the Pet Airways fleet offering main cabin travel for pampered pals only. Although it began taking reservations when it launched with an introductory one-way fare of $150, prices now range from $250–$300 and take off from regional airports close to five US cities - New York, Washington, Chicago, Denver, and Los Angeles - and seats are selling fast. While times are limited, and cross country trips take about 24 hours with an overnight stay-and-play, there are plans to expand to 25 cities in the next three years.

I can understand trepidation about flying a pup as cargo or checked baggage, but this airline flies up to 50 pets in a cabin specially fitted with crates, making a nice alternative for people with larger pets, provided your departure and arrival locations fit with their offerings. What's your take?

The Scoop: Southwest Airlines Now Flies the Pet-Friendly Skies

For those frequent furry fliers, there's a new available airline in town - Southwest. Starting today, customers can purchase pet tickets for travel beginning on June 17. The P.A.W.S. program runs $75 each way for small, in-cabin dogs or cats.

The rules are pretty standard compared to other airlines - one carrier per person that counts as the carry-on - but there's no mention of the standard 20-pound weight limit ("The dog or cat must be able to stand up and turn around in the carrier with ease.") and each carrier can hold no more than two of the same species of small cats or dogs. So tiny pup owners wouldn't need to grab a pal to carry both dogs on board under the plan. Would this decision now make you choose Southwest over another airline?

The Scoop: JetBlue Unveils JetPaws Program

JetBlue wants your furry friends to fly the friendly skies! The airline (which saddened us by raising prices earlier this year), just announced a brand-new program for jetting with your pet. In addition to a downloadable Travel Pettiquette guide, as part of the new JetPaws, customers will receive two TrueBlue customer loyalty program bonus points for each trip – that way your furball can help you earn frequent flier points, whether or not they're invited next time! Also noteworthy is JetBlue's new pet product line – they've got a travel carrier and separate kit (blankie, bone, and travel dish) co-designed by the founder of Jazzy Park Avenue Dog products (and New York Post columnist), Cindy Adams, and some pretty adorable pet shirts, too.

Pampered Pals: Jet Setter For Your Jet Setters

At first glance, I thought this carrier was waaaay to big to fit as any airplane carryon, but I was wrong! This Jet Setter ($170 and up) rolls upright and, when laid on the side, slides right under the seat in front of you. Meant for pets up to 15 pounds, this bag weighs only about three pounds with the wheels removed. If you're as bummed as I am after hearing that Jetblue has doubled the pet-as-personal-item fee from $50 to $100, then you might be browsing other airlines to get you and your pet where you need to go this travel season. When I lived in NYC, North could have chalked up quite the frequent flier miles as we flew home to my parents' house several times a year on JetBlue, back when it was just $50 each way. Nowadays, we usually travel in the car or on public transportation, but North's still got his puppy wings ready for the next vacay. With the increasing cost of fuel, those upcoming Summer road trips – and plane trips – can be few and far between. How often have your pets traveled on an airplane (sedated or not) and do you have any flights in the works for your furry friends?
