Pet Pic of the Day: Henson Soaks Up the Sun

Henson loves being outside. In this photo, it looks like he's using his time outdoors to catch some rays. Soak it up, buddy, according to Punxsutawney Phil, the bad weather is here to stay for a bit longer!

I know this looks like a lot of steps, but once you get the hang of it, it's a breeze!

First of all, join the Pet Pics group.
Click the pink "Share" menu on the top left side of the page.
Choose "Photos" and “Upload Photos."
Give your Gallery a “Title.”
Fill in the “Body” with details about your pet.
Click “Groups and Privacy" just below the "Search Title" box.
Choose the audience for your story to “Pet Pics!” in the dropdown menu.
Change channel to “Pets.”
Fill in tag field with relevant tags.
Don't forget to include your pet's name!
Click “I’m done” to submit content.

So join the Pet Pics group and share photos of your adorable pets! Yours just might end up on the PetSugar homepage.

Pet Pic of the Day: Sam Is Ready For Christmas!

You may recognize this Wheaten Terrier from her boating escapades over the Summer, but now Sam is totally Winter ready, and excited to rip open her gifts on Christmas day. But, with that big red bow around her neck, someone might mistake her for a gift, too!

PetSugar Street Team: Outward Hounds Ride on Boats!

How cute is Sam?! The Wheaten Terrier already found her sea legs thanks to this Outward Hound lifejacket . . . even though she's just a puppy. It's never too early.The insulated vest does double-duty as a flotation device to keep a dog's head above water when swimming or grab the easy handle for quick rescues should she take an unexpected dive. Coming in five sizes ($16 and up) to fit most pups my friend, Traci, says:

Sam gets so excited when we pull it out because it means a boat ride or some watery fun. I'm surprised how well she has taken to the water. Terrier means "earth" so you'd think she'd be all about staying high and dry!

Breed Spotlight: Scottish Terrier

The Scottish Terrier is an alert-looking pooch with a "heads-up, tails-up" attitude – the pointy ears and long muzzle make this one of the most recognizable doggie silhouettes around. Even though when I think of these pups I recall the black ones, they are also allowable in wheaten or brindle of any color. Scotties are small dogs usually weighing around 20 pounds – but what they lack in size, they certainly make up in spirit! According to the AKC breed standard, these trademark terrier characteristics are joined with a very special "varminty" expression. What the heck is varminty? Find out when you read more.

This word is commonly used in the dog world to describe a piercing expression that should also be very bright and keen – unsurprisingly, many terrier breeds should have these feisty characteristics. Very popular with US presidents, my research has dug up that several former presidents have owned these dogs, including Eisenhower, Reagan, and both Roosevelts! Oh, and don't forget these two cutie pies – they may look familiar as it's our current "First Dog" Barney meeting Miss Beazley when she joined the Bush family at the White House in 2005.

2008 Crufts Winner: Best in Show!

Congratulations to the Giant Schnauzer, Jafrak Philippe Olivier! The third time's the charm for this pooch, who has never come out on top during his previous efforts – and beat out some pretty awesome competitors.

2008 Crufts Winners: Hound, Pastoral, Working, and Terrier Group

Rounding up the groups competing at Crufts this year, this Samoyed Vandreem Imperial Hermioni by Berezniki won the Pastoral group. Caraway Celebrate Life, the Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier, won the Terrier group while a Giant Schnauzer, Jafrak Philippe Olivier, captured the Working group title. Finally it was, "Max," the Beagle (officially called Dialynne Maximus) coming out atop the Hound group. Wow, we saw some beautiful pups this year, did you have a fave from these groups, or the ones we saw last week?

Do Tell: Do You Agree With America's Pick For Obama?

Remember that poll to help America pick a pooch for Barack Obama? Although rescuing is usually a good option, his daughters suffer from allergies, meaning a hypoallergenic dog would do best in this home. Timed to coincide with his acceptance of the Democratic Party nomination, the AKC's released the results: a Poodle.

Personally, of the five finalists (Bichon Frise, Chinese Crested, Miniature Schnauzer, Poodle, and Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier), I was pulling for the mini Schnauzer - do you agree with the suggestion of any of the three sizes of poodles, or do you have a different idea?

The Scoop: Obamas Plan on Adding to the Family

In a recent interview with Access Hollywood, once again Barack Obama declared that, win or lose, their family would be welcoming a new addition: a dog! It seems everyone has an opinion on which pooch he should choose as the AKC released a list of five hypoallergenic dogs for his daughters' allergies (Bichon Frise, Chinese Crested, Miniature Schnauzer, Poodle, or Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier), and even animal rights activists share their opinions. In a letter to the senator, PETA expressed their view on why Mr. Obama should be looking at shelters instead of breeders:

Millions of Great American Mutts - the dog that should be our national dog - are set to die in our nation's extremely overcrowded pounds and shelters for lack of good homes. Adopting an animal not only saves a life, but demonstrates compassion, and the companion animal overpopulation crisis deserves attention from all Americans.

Although the Obamas have already expressed interest in rescuing a dog, I'm sure no matter which dog they choose they will give their new furry friend the love and attention it deserves. I can't wait to see the new addition!
