What's Your Take: Did Heather Mills Kill a Dog?

An East Sussex woman is claiming Heather Mills' fireworks killed her Weimaraner, Glow, seen above. The incident occurred last weekend during the 20-minute firework conclusion of the birthday celebration for Mills' daughter with Paul McCartney, Beatrice.

Sandra Rowbury (who lives yards away) says her five-year-old dog was terrified by the loud explosions and suffered a "fatally bloated gut," dying only a few hours after the birthday party ended.

I have a feeling it's going to be hard to prove this one, but what's your opinion – do you think she's guilty or not?

Gearing Up For Day Two of the WKC at MSG!

I'm still monitoring the pups as the Best in Breed competitions wrap up at the Garden! Remember how three of the four group finalists from the AKC/Eukanuba show made it to Best in Group yesterday? Well, all of the final three have made it again today. That means competing along with the others in the Sporting, Toy, and Working groups tonight will be Marge (the Weimaraner), Vikki (the Toy Poodle), and Macey (the Akita) respectively.

For those of you with other faves in these groups we've yet to see, don't worry about biased judges here. Even though other pups were big finishers in the past, the rules do not allow judges that have presided over a competition in the past six months to be present at Westminster. The pups are competing against the breed ideal, so it only makes sense that pooches who measured up before, will once again do so. However, that being said, I'm still pulling for one of those pups who captured the Hound group at the AKC show and here at Westminster last night - in case you missed my not-so-subtle hints, I'm really hoping that big Beagle, Uno, takes the big title tonight, too!

Out and About: Ohio's Wegman Exhibit at the Wexner

While you may know him for his iconic Weimaraner photos, William Wegman: Funney/Strange is 40-year retrospective of much of his painting, collage, video, and, of course, that amusing dog photography! With stops in New York, DC, Florida, and Massachusetts, it has been in Columbus since late September and will conclude its national tour here in the Midwest. This exhibition is located at the Wexner Center for the Arts and features a special project by this "inveterate jokester" in the lobby. If you're in the area (or traveling here for the holidays), catch it before it leaves on Dec. 30.

Pet Pic of the Day: Banjo and Blue Are Window Buddies

Although some dogs don't like to share their toys, it's essential to share a window to the outside world when you're traveling by car. All those new smells are important to take in! It's a science really, kinda like wine tasting. Just ask Banjo and Blue, who can smell home from five miles away.

2008 Westminster Winners: Sporting Group

We kicked off Day Two of Westminster with the Sporting group. Made up of dogs that point the game with their noses (i.e., the pointers), flush the game out (i.e., the spaniels), and then retrieve the game (i.e., the retrievers), these pooches are bred to be busy bees. With all those spaniels in the group, it's no surprise that a couple were finalists here. Ranging from the biggest, the Clumber Spaniel, to last year's Best in Show, James (the English Springer Spaniel), they're certainly popular and both the English Cocker and the A.S.C.O.B. made the Sporting group's short list last night. The A.S.C.O.B Cocker Spaniel stands for "any solid color other than black" and is represented by Dylan, seen at the bottom right. Neither he, nor the English Cocker (top left), captured the Sporting group title. It went to the grey ghost – Marge, the Weimaraner.

To the Rescue: Bloat

While bloat is a fairly common (even deadly) ailment, it is not another way to say a pup is overweight! Much like pharyngeal gag reflexes (aka, reverse sneezes), it has a serious scientific name: gastric torsion. This occurs when a deep-chested dog has a full tum (of food or water) and then engages in vigorous activity or exercise. Pups like this Great Dane have stomachs that are not attached to their ribcages, so when it's heavy and full (the "before"), it can flip around and block the intestinal track (the "after").

Help combat bloat before it happens:

Feed multiple, smaller meals throughout the day instead of one large meal.
Make sure pets rest for 45 minutes to one hour after eating before any vigorous exercise.
If you notice your pup gulps food or water, consider a "slowing bowl" like the Drink Better or DogPause.

This typically affects the Akita, Great Dane, German Shepherd, Saint Bernard, Irish Wolfhound, Irish Setter, Doberman Pinscher, Weimaraner, Bloodhound, and other large mixed breed dogs.

Dog Days of Summer: Who's at Risk of Sunburn?

It's not just the hairless pups getting sunburned! All dogs and outdoor cats are at risk with those with light skin, light-colored or recently shaved fur, or pink noses having a slightly higher chance of this problem. Sunburn can cause ulcerations, which makes pets more susceptible to yucky infections, and as sun damage occurs, skin cells die and can release proteins that inappropriately trigger the immune system. Because the repeated, excessive exposure to UV radiation can lead to issues like squamous cell carcinoma, breeds that are predisposed to cancer (such as boxers and Weimaraners) need extra protection no matter what!

Next time you lather on the sunblock and head out for some summertime fun, don't forget to protect your pets, too! To learn which areas are at risk, read more.

Common problem spots in pets include tips of ears, bridges of noses, and any area with shorter hair or exposed skin – apply sunscreen here first. However, I was surprised when my vet also told me that stomaches, groins, and insides of legs are at risk, too! The sunlight reflects up on these areas from the hot sidewalk or sand and the sunblock put there can be the first to be rubbed off in the grass or licked off by inquiring tongues. Hooray! Look at Uno, the Best in Show at the 132nd Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show! Of all the groups, the hounds have suffered the longest drought in the final ring – it's been 25 years since a member has taken Best in Show when an Afghan Hound won in 1983! But, enough with the history, I'm so crazy for this pup that I'm working on a gallery of cute piccys of him in the ring receiving his title – this won't be the last you see of Uno being número uno!

The AKC/Eukanuba National Champion Is...

What a great show this year! Even though it was filmed in Long Beach, Calif. back in December, the AKC/Eukanuba National Championship premiered on TV last night. Of course, this was a must-watch for North and I as we curled up with a couple friends and some popcorn and peanut butter. After going through each of the groups, the final seven pooches – five females and two males – came out into the ring. After closer inspection and some deliberation, this Sealyham Terrier was (figuratively) crowned best in show! With a full name of Ch Efbe's Hidalgo At Goodspice, the pooch is called Charmin for short . . . earning that ultra cute name because of his resemblance to a ball of white fluff!
