Spring Blooms with Uno!

Even after winning Westminster, a celebripup's role is never done! Everyone's favorite baying Beagle made talk-show circuit rounds, "rang" the opening bell at the Nasdaq stock exchange, and met tons of his admirers. Although the pooch has retired from the dog show world, he certainly keeps busy booking enough appearances to practically need his own agent! Among those canine close-ups was a stop at the Macy's Flower Show in The Cellar of Macy's Herald Square on Sunday. Clearly he's in great demand getting everyone from the President (who wants him to come to the Oval Office) to the St. Louis Cardinals (who want him to run out the first ball) to even Oprah clamoring for a visit – I have a feeling Uno mania isn't gonna stop any time soon so check out some more photos of this pup's fun weekend when you read more.

Super Cute Gallery: Big Beagle Being the Big Winner at Westminster!

It sure is hard being a star! After making the morning talk show rounds, anyone who missed this cutie-pie winner last night will surely remember his name for time to come. The ever-spunky Uno got a standing ovation (!) at the Garden . . . and responded by jumping up and baying right back! I only wish I could have found a picture of the little (big) Beagle attempting to chew on the microphones shoved in the face of his posse. Awww! Can't get enough? Will Charmin Win Westminster, Too?

Of the four groups showing tonight – Hound, Terrier, Non-Sporting, and Herding – three of the four pooches that captured Best in Group at the AKC/Eukanuba National Championship have now captured their breed competitions at Westminster, too. That means, in addition to the other fabulous breeds included in those four groups, we'll see some familiar faces again tonight! Charmin, the Sealyham Terrier, that won both the Terrier and Best in Show title has captured the Sealyham spot, Geneva that captured the Herding group title will be the German Shepherd we see, and über-cute Uno, this 15-in. Beagle who won the Hound group, will be our Beagle du jour. Congratulations to those three pooches, and all the others that will be measuring up to the standards – I'll be updating as the show goes on, so check back on PetSugar tonight! When you spend hours and hours washing, grooming, pruning, and preening a pup, you certainly don't want him to get all messed up before show time! The nearby Hotel Pennsylvania opens their doors to the many doggies and handlers by converting function space into what's likely the largest indoor pet spa in all of New York – adorable little Uno gets his exercise on one of the treadmills (there's also indoor potty stations set up) so his shiny coat and clean paws don't get soiled from the weekend snow – and current freezing temps – in the Big Apple.

2009 Westminster Winners: Hound Group

As usual, the first group we saw at the big show was the Hound group. Even though Uno is now retired (yet still making his rounds all over NYC . . . and the country for that matter), I was curious to see what pups would come out on top this year around. Between the speedy "sight" hounds and the great sniffing "scent" hounds, as long as you're not saving the results on your TiVo, find out who came out on top when you read more.

It's the Scottish Deerhound capturing this group! Fairly similar in appearance to the Irish Wolfhound that came in second, you may remember one of these breeds from a past episode of Gossip Girl – we never quite settled on which dogs the Archibalds own, but how I digress!

The top placing pups in this group were:

Scottish Deerhound: Ch Gayleward's Tiger Woods. Male born Jan. 11, 2002.
Irish Wolfhound: Ch Dun Myrica Speaker Of Eagle. Male born Aug. 25, 2005.

Hooray! Look at Uno, the Best in Show at the 132nd Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show! Of all the groups, the hounds have suffered the longest drought in the final ring – it's been 25 years since a member has taken Best in Show when an Afghan Hound won in 1983! But, enough with the history, I'm so crazy for this pup that I'm working on a gallery of cute piccys of him in the ring receiving his title – this won't be the last you see of Uno being número uno!

2008 Westminster Winners: Hound Group

The first group we saw at the big show was the Hound group. Its members include the "scent" hounds; these pooches are typically low-to-the-ground with an acute sense of smell like the Basset Hound. Also in the hound group are those that are considered "sight" hounds and use an incredible speed and stamina to relentlessly run down their quarry! It was a great group to watch (including my über-cutie fave) . . . and the results are in! Unless you've got it stored on TiVo (and you don't want to see who won just yet), read more.

Hooray for the 15-in. Beagle! As the announcers kept referring to him, this was the "big Beagle," as opposed to the 13-in. variety. A favorite of mine from the AKC/Eukanuba National Championship show, I was über-happy to see "Uno" capture . . . well, número uno in the Hound group at Westminster, too!

The top placing pups in this group were:

Beagle (15-in.): Ch K-Run's Park Me In First. Male born May 5, 2005.
Dachshund (Longhaired): Ch Solo's Drag-Queen SL. Female born Oct. 27, 2003.
Harrier: Ch Downhome Family Tradition. Male born Feb. 13, 2005.

PetSugar's Crufts 2008 Cheat Sheet

The time has come for the largest dog show in the world - Crufts features over 23,000 pooches! Sadly, it's not televised (live) and it takes place in England, so it's not something most of us can watch. Sigh. But don't worry, I'll be providing photos and updates from the four-day event as it progresses here on PetSugar! Before I got started, I needed to brush up on my dog groups because the organization of the Kennel Club UK is a bit different than the AKC and Westminster Kennel Club. While there are still seven competing groups, the members and names are switched up, and there are some breeds that we wouldn't even see here in the US. My little Boston Terrier would be part of the Utility group in this show. To see a brief description of the groups, read more.

Toy: Pretty straightforward, this group includes many of the pooches from our Toy group along with breeds like the Coton De Tulear that can't compete here yet!
Utility: This is similar to our Non-Sporting group - a hodgepodge mix - but, in England, there are a couple differences like all three poodle sizes (including the Toy Poodle) compete here.
Gundog: We'll find the hunting dogs like retrievers, pointers, and spaniels in this group - seems like our Sporting Group but with fun dogs that I'm not too familiar with – can you say Large Musterlander, Lagotto Romagnolo, and Kooikerhondje three times fast?
Working: Once a worker, always a worker as these pups were bred to be guards and search and rescue dogs. One of my fave newcomers at Westminster this year was the Tibetan Mastiff, competing here as well alongside the Mastiff, Bullmastiff, and Neapolitan Mastiff.
Pastoral: Meant to work livestock, similar to our Herding group, you'll see another sheepdog (the Maremma Sheepdog), and four different variations of the Belgian Shepherd.
Terrier: I love the spunky Terriers - many familiar faces here in this big group alongside a couple different ones like the adorable Cesky Terrier.
Hound: It's Uno's group, the Hound dogs! Here we'll see sight and scent pups like the Cirneco dell'Etna, Sloughi, and Portuguese Podengo who are all members of AKC Foundation Stock Service, which allows these purebred breeds to continue to develop here in the US while providing them with the security of a reliable and reputable avenue to maintain their records.
