It never hurts to have some extra light when walking in the evening. Even if your nighttime walks stay on city roads with plentiful lamps, the Leash Light ($10) can illuminate the sidewalk and street to show cracks and bumps and make you a bit more visible to traffic, too.
Now for those of you who like to stroll on darker country roads or away from streetlamps, the six ultra-bright LED bulbs can really show you the way.

If you've ever been to (or lived in) New York, chances are you've seen a horse drawn carriage in Central Park or the line of horses waiting outside the south side of this landmark – they've been around for over a century. Well, if you live there still, you may also be familiar with the proposed bill to ban the horse carriage business in the city. Many people have strong opinions about their presence – and appropriateness – with some celebrities getting in on the conversation, too.

Another reason to get a car seat for your vehicle-loving pets, but also, just to remember to turn off your car when you leave your pets inside! Charles McCowan of Azusa, Calif., made what he thought would be a quick stop for coffee, leaving his pooch Max, an 80-lb. Boxer, inside his running truck.

To finish up our week in Hawaii, let's check out some of the species that call it home. Winter is a great time to go whale watching — in fact, many people consider February to be the peak season on the islands — and their waters are home to 23 species of marine mammals including the humpback whale and several types of dolphins. Aquatic Surfari's Wild Side Specialty Tours, offer daily morning wildlife charters to look for whales combined with dolphin and turtle encounters and reef snorkels to maximize your adventure.

In neighborhoods that get much street traffic, shops and restaurants often put out dishes with water for pups passing by. It always seemed like a nice touch to me – and let me know whether or not my little guy would be welcome there. However, as friendly this gesture may be, please be careful before letting your poochies drink from that water.

Today marks the anniversary of the establishment of The Seeing Eye, one of the first organizations to train dogs to assist the blind over 75 years ago. I've offered up some quick tips when meeting and greeting a working dog in public based on information from Guide Dogs for the Blind.
- First and foremost, remember guide dogs are responsible for leading someone who cannot see and should never be distracted from their duties.
