When Keyshia Cole performed at the Essence Music Festival over the weekend, she brought along a furry friend to keep her company in New Orleans – I guess not all pets love giving kisses as this one looks shy about showing any affection! Not only was the miniature schnauzer hesitant to pucker up, it proved impossible for both Keyshia and her bashful pet to face the camera at the same time. Oh well, they're still super cute in the piccys below.

Baton Rouge's Cat Haven has one of the largest feral programs in the area. Even though they were just established in 1999, they have already trapped, neutered, and adopted or released almost 3,000 kitties! This process not only helps limit the numbers of wild cats in the area but can also save hundreds of kittens each year from a future life outdoors by transferring them into the haven's adoption program at a young age.

No trip to Nola is complete without at least a brief stop in the French Quarter – just thinking about the beignets and café au lait makes me drool. I definitely want to check out the classic Hotel Monteleone next time I travel there – this historic (haunted!) hotel has been pet-friendly since March 2007. In addition to decades of history and tradition, they now offer special pet treats and tips for your four-legged friends.

Named the Louisiana state dog in 1979, the lovely, spotted Catahoula Leopard Dog originated in the north central part of this state. Their name comes from a Choctaw word translating to "sacred lake," and the breed was originally found in the Catahoula Lake region by early settlers. Known primarily as hunting and working dogs, their original use was to pen and catch wild hogs and cows using the "canine fence" method to hold – and direct – herds for their owners.

It's especially fitting that we're spending this week out and about in Louisiana, home to the biggest Mardi Gras celebration in the country! North wasn't lucky enough to make up some crawfishdog gumbo, but I'd still love to deck him out for Fat Tuesday.
My fave dog-friendly part of this holiday is the parade by the Krewe of Barkus — the theme of the sixteenth annual event was "Indiana Bones and the Raiders of the Lost Bark," and took place last weekend in New Orleans.

Lovely and luxurious, all of these neck pieces look pretty stylish to me. Granted, we're not the ones wearing it (but we are the ones buying) so, if your pooch likes texture, check out three alligator-inspired collars. Whether they're mock croc or the real thing, I'm not telling .
