Globetrotters: Tokyo's Parading Irish Setters

While we played guess that breed with another Irish pup, there are still several other breeds deserving a shout out yesterday. From the Glen of Imaal Terriers to the Irish Water Spaniels, among the pretty pups coming from this country are my mom's fave – the lovely Irish Setters.

And clearly she's not the only one. Check out members of Tokyo's Irish Setter Club donning green and orange – and similarly adorned pups – for their own St. Patrick's Day Parade. Some 2,000 people took part in the festivities to commemorate the Irish patron saint, so see some photos when you read more.

The National Dog Show is a Thanksgiving TV tradition in my house - when I win the battle of the big screen away from football, that is. Airing immediately after the Macy's parade on NBC, more than 150 breeds will compete to win best in show. This year we'll see three new AKC-recognized breeds - I've gathered pictures and facts on each one, so click through and be prepared for these furry faces.

2010 Westminster Winners: Sporting Group

Spaniels, Setters, Pointers and Retrievers, the Sporting Group has dogs of all athletic talents. All the way from finding to chasing to fetching, even the judges at Westminster examine the traditional characteristics and expressions in these show quality dogs.You'll notice four canines up above - do you have your eye on the group's winner? Chalk up a victory for the Brittany - It was Tally as the big winner for the sporty pups!

The AKC/Eukanuba National Champion Is...

Do you recognize this furry face? It's Sadie, the Scottie that won the 2009 National Dog Show on Thanksgiving. As it turns out, this terrier also captured Best in Show at the AKC/Eukanuba Dog Show that aired on Animal Planet on Feb. 6, making her the latest champion.

As she's quite the favorite already, many believe she'll go on to capture the big win at Westminster next week as well. After all, she was a group finalist in 2009 - remember her lil piddle here - so she's surely one to watch.

To the Rescue: Bloat

While bloat is a fairly common (even deadly) ailment, it is not another way to say a pup is overweight! Much like pharyngeal gag reflexes (aka, reverse sneezes), it has a serious scientific name: gastric torsion. This occurs when a deep-chested dog has a full tum (of food or water) and then engages in vigorous activity or exercise. Pups like this Great Dane have stomachs that are not attached to their ribcages, so when it's heavy and full (the "before"), it can flip around and block the intestinal track (the "after").

Help combat bloat before it happens:

Feed multiple, smaller meals throughout the day instead of one large meal.
Make sure pets rest for 45 minutes to one hour after eating before any vigorous exercise.
If you notice your pup gulps food or water, consider a "slowing bowl" like the Drink Better or DogPause.

This typically affects the Akita, Great Dane, German Shepherd, Saint Bernard, Irish Wolfhound, Irish Setter, Doberman Pinscher, Weimaraner, Bloodhound, and other large mixed breed dogs.
