Happy Halloween From North!

Seems only fitting that my little food scavenger was fitted up as a pirate! Thanks to my mom, North didn't have to go costume-less today - and he thought not one, but two ensembles last year meant he would have a break in '09?! Not quite, little boy. I've seen the adoro guinea pig costumes from Cuddly Cavies, but I just spotted their rabbit selection and, boy, my nose is twitching with delight at these cute piccys (though I can't vouch for the lop-eared model). Howl-o-ween Hoodies For Year-Round Dress Up Fun

It's costume crunch time! If you're worried the outfit of your (pet's) dreams won't arrive by Saturday, think outside the strictly Halloween box and go for a sweatshirt that can keep him warm and cute all year long.

Donned by pooches for weeks before and weeks after Oct. 31, it's just a playful substitute for a warm sweater no matter the season. It's really cutting it close if you've yet to come up with a costume for your furry friend. When thinking about easy costumes for pets, I immediately thought of my go-to getup for years: cat ears. Simple enough for this Halloween grinch, but a tail . . . no, thanks.

I admit it: sometimes I dress up my pooch for picture's sake. After all, those wild outfits bring fits of giggles to friends and family and Halloween is the best example - I oink, oink, oinked at him all day last year and I still can't get enough!

Four paws up for PetSugar's Dress-Up Extravaganza, a place to share pictures any time your furball wears a fun ensemble, from Halloween and beyond. Even people who wouldn't ordinarily outfit a dog make an exception for a holiday's furry photo opp so this group lets everyone else in on your guilty pleasure.

Click the "New Post" button on the top right.
Enter a Title - like your pet's name - and click "Insert Image" to upload a picture of your pal.
If you'd like, you can add more details about your animal in the body section.

Howl-o-Ween Heroes: Tompkins Square Dog Parade Pics

Claiming to be the world's largest ongoing dog Halloween party (of course, not proven but I've been there and it's big), Tompkins Square rolled out the dirt and leaf-strewn carpet for the 19th annual event in the East Village on Sunday. Quite a few creative ensembles were on hand, check through some of my favorite furballs and see who won it all at the end!

Homemade Howl-oween: A Grape Costume Idea!

What a grape, err I mean great, costume idea! It may not be a pet-safe snack, but it's a neat ensemble nonetheless.
Turn your own dog into Grapes on a Vine . . . on a dime! OK, more than $.10 but this costume can easily be had, especially if your pup already has a green coat or sweatshirt.

To create, simply blow up purple balloons (or choose red or green balloons for your favorite flavor) and hot glue them to the coat. Add on some leaves cut from a garland and you've got a fine costume on your hands - just be sure to place the balloons where your pup can't accidentally pop them and put it out of reach when the photo opp's done.

Howl-o-ween Twinsies: Tiny Dancers

Your pup already prances down the street so why not make her a tiny dancer? The next one-piece costume idea comes from a Frenchie's Flickr photo - simple tutus for you two!

Pick out tulle fabric at a local craft store, or start with a child-sized skirt, and snip away to fit a tiny doggie waist. Cutting (or using) elastic will require more sewing skills but you can instead hot glue a velvety ribbon to the fabric and tie it under the tummy in a bow.

I was surprised by the number of shops selling a pet-sized tutu (who knew?) so, if you're not lil Miss DIY, buy custom-made dog tutus ($21 and up) for all shapes and sizes -it's "cut in underneath for ease in pottying" - but you're both on your own for the toe shoes.

Is Your Kitty a Red Devil?

Kitties can celebrate their own Meow-lo-ween, just don't get crazy with the costumes. Most finicky felines will protest a full-body suit with their paws and claws but a simple hat? Sure, why not. I know of a whole group dedicated to cats in hats you bought at Target and my recent trip to this superstore turned up some amazing results.

Sadly, I couldn't find the exact models online, but these caps come close to the cuteness. With black/white or brown/black stripes with the Red Horns, is $30 too much to buy in to this photo opp?

I'm not a fan of spending tons of money on a costume I won't ever wear again. It's a sad fact I know to be true. However, as a big fan of all things Boston (like the smooshy, not the city), I can barely resist this "Vampire Bat" Puff Sleeve tee on sale for $18 (from $30), dog not included.

Kicking off the Howl-o-ween Twinsies series is this batty costume idea to share with an equally batty pooch on a recession-friendly budget - with matching Dog Bat Wings for pets of all sizes at about the same price ($19), this cuteness won't suck the funds out of your bank account in the process.
