RIP, Gibson: World's Tallest Dog Loses His Cancer Battle

Gibson (the Guinness Record holder for the world's tallest dog) was diagnosed with bone cancer back in April and, sadly, he recently lost his battle with the disease. The beautiful Harlequin was undergoing chemotherapy and, when he needed to have his front right paw amputated, his owner started Three Paws For the Cause to raise awareness about canine cancer.

Gibson's vet, Dr. Peter Walsh said:

Last week Gibson began having trouble using his back legs. X-rays showed that the cancer had spread to his spine and his lungs. Ms. Hall made the very difficult decision based on her concern and love for Gibson to have him humanely euthanized. Gibson died peacefully in the loving arms of Ms. Hall.

In the Spotlight: Buddy Loves America (and Lucy, Too)

Look who made a special visit to the Ugly Betty set – America Ferrera's two furry friends. The Golden Retriever named Buddy seems to be needing some extra love, while Lucy (the Great Dane) needs some extra warmth with that sleek coat. It's so nice to take time out of a busy filming day for some QT with her pets especially when that includes snuggles and kisses!

I wonder how often the doggies come to set, and whether either will make it onto the small screen sometime soon – I spot some true walk-on potential here with these scene stealers.

Dogs 101: What Did You Learn in Episode 106?

Great Golly! Greatly Growing Great Dane

Growing puppies not only eat you out of house and home, often times their growth spurts make them appear doubled in size practically overnight! That's definitely the case with this cute Great Dane, Azul. He started off pretty small (for a dane) next to his new sis, Sydney, but after a short while, he made that Rottweiler look downright teensy. His record breaking last week made me think about all those other animals currently topping the charts for age, size and more. The Scoop: Titan Named the World's Tallest Living Dog

You don't need to remember this Titan since he's still alive. As the only animal honored in the 30 Guinness records announced on Nov. 12, this pooch really measures up! The 4-year-old dog is blind, deaf, and epileptic but measures in at a whopping 3 1/2 feet tall from floor to shoulder, taller than even Gibson, the previous record holder who died back in August.

Rescued from the Middle Tennessee Great Dane Rescue as a puppy, he could see out of one eye when younger before going totally blind but remains calm and friendly towards all friends, human and furry. Due to his height, he undergoes acupuncture and chiropractic adjustments every three weeks and, if he could safely stand on his hind legs, he'd probably top 80 inches ear to toe - wowza! Eco Friendly Stuff Sacks and Molly Mutt's Go Hand in Hand

I know what an investment a dog bed can be. You pick out just the right size, color, shape, and feel, then dig into your pocketbook cause your furry friend is totally worth the price. But, after a few months, do these new digs seem totally worn out, leaving you searching for yet another new bed? This happened in my household a few times and let me tell you, North does not appreciate musical beds. So instead of shelling out $50 or more for a store bought dud that will end up in a landfill, take a more wallet and earth friendly approach to bed buying. Check out Stuff Sacks.

To the Rescue: Bloat

While bloat is a fairly common (even deadly) ailment, it is not another way to say a pup is overweight! Much like pharyngeal gag reflexes (aka, reverse sneezes), it has a serious scientific name: gastric torsion. This occurs when a deep-chested dog has a full tum (of food or water) and then engages in vigorous activity or exercise. Pups like this Great Dane have stomachs that are not attached to their ribcages, so when it's heavy and full (the "before"), it can flip around and block the intestinal track (the "after").

Help combat bloat before it happens:

Feed multiple, smaller meals throughout the day instead of one large meal.
Make sure pets rest for 45 minutes to one hour after eating before any vigorous exercise.
If you notice your pup gulps food or water, consider a "slowing bowl" like the Drink Better or DogPause.

This typically affects the Akita, Great Dane, German Shepherd, Saint Bernard, Irish Wolfhound, Irish Setter, Doberman Pinscher, Weimaraner, Bloodhound, and other large mixed breed dogs.

Pet Pic of the Day: Newton's Busy Life

Newton has quite the social calendar! When he's not in daycare, he's probably taking walks in the tall grass. Or you might find him jetting off on weekend trips to the Rocky Mountains, or vacationing in style in the city. Of course when he's not busy stealing shoes, he's playing with the big boys like Axel – a Great Dane cross. He's a big dog at heart you know.
