Will Charmin Win Westminster, Too?

Of the four groups showing tonight – Hound, Terrier, Non-Sporting, and Herding – three of the four pooches that captured Best in Group at the AKC/Eukanuba National Championship have now captured their breed competitions at Westminster, too. That means, in addition to the other fabulous breeds included in those four groups, we'll see some familiar faces again tonight! Charmin, the Sealyham Terrier, that won both the Terrier and Best in Show title has captured the Sealyham spot, Geneva that captured the Herding group title will be the German Shepherd we see, and über-cute Uno, this 15-in. Beagle who won the Hound group, will be our Beagle du jour. Congratulations to those three pooches, and all the others that will be measuring up to the standards – I'll be updating as the show goes on, so check back on PetSugar tonight! In the meantime, if you're curious where little Uno is getting his exercise, read more.

When you spend hours and hours washing, grooming, pruning, and preening a pup, you certainly don't want him to get all messed up before show time! The nearby Hotel Pennsylvania opens their doors to the many doggies and handlers by converting function space into what's likely the largest indoor pet spa in all of New York – adorable little Uno gets his exercise on one of the treadmills (there's also indoor potty stations set up) so his shiny coat and clean paws don't get soiled from the weekend snow – and current freezing temps – in the Big Apple.

The Scoop: Entirely Self-Cleaning Toilet Invented For Dogs!

Doesn't this man (and stuffed dog) look proud? Especially with the fake poopy prop as a demonstration of how this self-cleaning pooch potty works.

Today marks the opening day of the 36th International Exhibition of Inventions in Geneva, Switzerland, where more than 710 exhibitors from 45 countries come to present their innovative creations. This is Philippe Glimes (of Spain) who came up with the pretty genius – but I'm betting pricey – product . . . if it ever makes it to mass market, that is.

Learn how it works and see the toilet up close when you read more.

The continuous carpeting that represents grass – umm, astroturf – is automatically washed with a high-pressure hose (masked by that additional strand of green), and all the poo is washed down into the sewer. Hmm, that's an interesting alternative to scooping if they put this on every street corner instead – what do you think of it? Cool? Crazy? Something else . . .

Source

2008 Westminster Winners: Herding Group

Of special note, there will be four new breeds competing at Westminster this year . . . and two are part of the Herding group! The Swedish Vallhund is AKC's 156th breed and the Beauceron the 157th, both eligible to compete within this group effective June 27, 2007. Unfortunately neither of those new breeds won but, if you wanna know who captured the Herding Group at last night's portion of Westminster, read more.

"Deuce", the Australian Shepherd, will be competing again tomorrow night for Best in Show! Herding is a natural instinct in this group's members as the dogs traditionally serve ranchers and farmers by moving livestock from one place to another. Now I've witnessed a Collie try to round up pedestrians on the sidewalk so I can attest this behavior can be hard to break (but still entertaining to witness).

Rounding up the top four placers were:

Australian Shepherd: Ch Vinelake Collinswood Yablon. Female born Sept. 11, 2003.

Bouvier des Flandres: Ch Quiche's Demetrius. Male born June 18, 2004.

German Shepherd: Ch Kaleefs Geneva Aeval-Achtung. Female born Sept. 4, 2002.

Collie (Rough): Ch Sylvan Argent Simply Irresistible. Female born Nov. 9, 2005.

The AKC/Eukanuba National Champion Is...

What a great show this year! Even though it was filmed in Long Beach, Calif. back in December, the AKC/Eukanuba National Championship premiered on TV last night. Of course, this was a must-watch for North and I as we curled up with a couple friends and some popcorn and peanut butter. After going through each of the groups, the final seven pooches – five females and two males – came out into the ring. After closer inspection and some deliberation, this Sealyham Terrier was (figuratively) crowned best in show! With a full name of Ch Efbe's Hidalgo At Goodspice, the pooch is called Charmin for short . . . earning that ultra cute name because of his resemblance to a ball of white fluff! To learn which other dogs topped their groups (and see when you can catch the next airing of this show), read more.

Terrier: Sealyham Terrier (Charmin)

Sporting: Weimaraner (Marge)

Hound: Beagle-15-inch (Uno)

Working: Akita (Macey)

Toy: Toy Poodle (Vikki)

Non-sporting: Standard Poodle (Yes)

Herding: German Shepherd (Geneva)

AKC Eukanuba National Championship on Animal Planet (all times EST)

Sun., Feb. 3 – noon to 3 p.m.

Thurs., Feb. 7 – 8 p.m. to 11 p.m. & 11 p.m. to 2 a.m.

Sat., Feb. 9 – 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Sun., Feb. 17, 3 p.m. to 6 p.m.

Sat., Feb. 23, 8 p.m. to 11 p.m. & 11 p.m. to 2 a.m.
