The Scoop: Endangered Chinese Box Turtle Born in Bristol

Even though the lil guy (or girl?) is just a half-ounce and one-and-a-half-inches long, it'll eventually grow to be closer to seven inches and two pounds. This Chinese box turtle was born at the Bristol Zoo on August 12, and can live to be over 50 years old!
As happy as I am to see this newborn, unfortunately these turtles are endangered in the wild because they've been hunted for their meat or for medicinal purposes for too many years – good thing this one's safe! I think it's so adoro (says the sucker for all baby animals) so check out more pictures below.

Lily Allen's Pup Gets a New Name and a New Toy!

It's not that hard to change a pet's name . . . especially if she comes with one you can't see yourself shouting across the dog park! You may recognize this pup as Honey, but Lily Allen changed the name of her newly-rescued dog to Mable. Awwww!The new BFFs are hitting up all sorts of spots in London like super-hip Primrose Hill Pets for a pretty pink collar and leash (that looks similar to celeb fave, Mendota) before running around Primrose Hill itself. My eagle eyes immediately recognized this new toy to chase – a Jungle Ball ($5), perfect for tough chewers like Staffordshire Bullies!

New Doggy Alert! Lily Allen's Rescued Pup

This hair color is not the only recent change in Lily Allen's life – she picked up a new dog yesterday! Meet Honey, the rescued pooch from London's Battersea Dogs and Cats Home. The singer shared her thoughts on the pup in a blog post last week:

Anyways in other news, I'm getting a dog from Battersea dogs home, I found her on the weekend, and after a visit from a rehoming officer hopefully, I'll have her by next week. She's called Honey and she's quite fat (insert dogs like their owners joke here), but very sweet, she's a mongrel. There were so many Staffordshire Bullies there, it was so sad. People should really think about getting puppies from breeders or breeding them for that matter, if you saw all those poor dogs without a home with their sad little faces, you wouldn't even think about buying dogs from people who profit.

In the Spotlight: Harrods, Puppies, and Kim Cattrall

I was super excited to spot these furballs in the arms of Kim Cattrall at the opening of the annual Summer Sale at Harrods yesterday because, ummm, when am I not excited for puppies?! At first, I was a bit baffled why these cutie doxie models were involved at all but my eagle eyes discovered that she's actually seen here in the pet department – check out those red toy squeaky slippers in the background!

This department store has some of my fave merch for our furry friends – in fact, when I spent all that time in London, I picked up a cute tshirt for my dog that he still wears to this day!

The Scoop: Shocking Reasons Cats Were Dumped in Shelters

I could never ever imagine giving up my four-legged baby and I know that all of you feel the same about your precious pets, which makes this news even more infuriating. I caught a recent UK Daily Mail story about some shocking reasons cats are being dumped into the local animal shelters.

The RSPCA in West London bares all when trying to find forever homes for the unwanted felines, including listing why the now homeless kitties were brought to them. Reasons for giving up some of these beautiful cats range from having too long of a coat, not matching the owner's new carpet, and not wanting to pay a $10 a day cat sitter fee while they hit the beach for a vacay. I can't imagine how anyone could give up an animal because of these reasons, but apparently some people just don't have a heart. What's more, the number of animals left abandoned in the RSPCA's care rose 23 percent last year to leave 7,347 pets without homes which makes it even more important to extend your love to a shelter animal, but to first make absolutely sure you are ready for the responsibilities of a pet!

This Penguin Cutie Is Only One Week Old!

I've already got a soft spot for penguins as is and, added to my love for baby animals, the twofer just melted my heart. I mean this is the teeniest lil penguin I've seen in a while, weighing just 85 grams (three ounces). The adoro chick hatched on March 24 at Chester Zoo in England. Dubbed Aero, he was incubated for 46 days by his parents, Warty and Hislop. The zoo hopes that up to 20 other chicks will be born between now and mid-April, as penguins usually lay a clutch of two eggs (and take turns laying on them) – even Aero has a new sibling yet unhatched! The zoo chose "chocolate-themed" names for all the births near Eastertime. See what sweet snack Aero was named for, and some close up shots of the baby, when you read more.

Unbeknownst to me, Aero is a Nestlé chocolate introduced in England in 1935, a milk chocolate bar first filled with milky bubbles. They've now got other mouth-watering flavors like caramel (yum!) and mint (double yum!) - I wonder if my pals over at our UK sites could ship some over to me!

Baby Giraffe Goes for Sloppy Seconds

Yum! Ten-day-old Margaret takes a sweet sip – with a giraffe's version of a milk mustache no less – from Tim Rowlands at England's Chester Zoo. She's actually the first Rothschild's giraffe born there and already she has a BFF in her keeper who named the lovely lass after his mother. Margaret's having difficulty suckling from her birth mom which is why she gets this second chance with a bottle. I'm hoping she'll be long and lean in no time; even though she's already over four-feet-tall, she's still a tiny two feet under the typical six-foot size of a baby giraffe.
