Even More Orphaned "Pittens"... And This Time They're British!

I loved hearing about Lilly Lou the dog and her adopted kittens, dubbed "pittens" (for puppy/kittens) so when Citizen told me about more cross-species caretaking, I couldn't wait to check it out. Ever giving mom, Echo, nurses her six new golden pups, in addition to six orphaned cats as well – I think it's even more heartwarming than the last story!

The Scoop: Dog Nurses "Pittens" Back To Health

Who says cats and dogs can't get along? An Iowa shelter dog dubbed Lilly Lou has been nursing nine kittens from three different litters back to health after they all lost their mothers. Initially, the shelter workers gave Lilly three kittens – called "pittens," or puppy kittens by shelter staffers – to help watch over while others were being bottle fed. But, to their surprise, Lilly Lou started acting as a loving mother to the kittens, herding them together if they started wandering off. Soon, Lilly began feeding and grooming them, so workers gave her more kittens to care for, since their chances of survival were better with Lilly taking them as her own.

"She does everything momma cat would do," said Angie Beard, a worker at the Des Moines County Humane Society. "She's excellent." With Lilly Lou having recently given birth to her own set of pups, it seems she was perfect for the job! Lilly Lou will keep the kittens under her care for another three weeks until they are healthy and ready to be adopted.

The Scoop: Cat Gives Birth to a Dog!

I'm always looking for cute pictures to share with you and, when I stumbled upon this, I had to read the photo caption twice . . . it says that a cat gave birth to a dog in Eastern China! Hummm. Ooo-kay. Allegedly this lil black pup was born in the Anhui Province with five kitty siblings and all six share the mother cat's milk. Now considering we've seen dogs nursing kittens and even bunnies, I'm not too surprised about the generous mamas but I find it hard (verrrry hard) to believe that this pup came out of that cat's tum! I'm no scientist, but it doesn't seem possible. Are you believing this story?

Before you share your thoughts – and I know you've got them! – take a look at the adoro new family when you read more.

View 7 Photos ›
