As an animal lover, I understand that pets are important fixtures in people's lives and feel a connection with those furry faces I can recognize on sight. Some pups are known for their famous owners, while others are famous in their own right. From the pup that cheekily said "Yo Quiero Taco Bell" to past presidents and celebrities' furry friends like Socks and Loki, tell me which late pet do you miss most in 2009?

RIP, Chanel: The World's Oldest Dog Passes Away

I've got some more sad news to announce: People Pets is reporting that the world's oldest pooch passed away on Aug. 28. The Wirehaired Dachshund named Chanel celebrated her 21st birthday - 147 in dog years! - back on May 6.

Although she suffered from cataracts, and had her eyes protected by those awesome Doggles, she was otherwise in good health and had plenty of pep according to her owners Karl and Denice Shaughnessy of Port Jefferson Station, NY. This pooch will surely be missed so check out a video from her big birthday bash earlier this year below!

2010 Westminster Winners: Hound Group

Ain't nuthin' but a hound dog . . . umm, make that 26 hound dogs. For the first set showing on Monday night at MSG, the Hound Group kicked things off right!

Can you guess which of the four finalists captured the top spot for these native hunters? Take your pick and find out when you read more.

It was the Whippet with a call name of "Chanel" capturing the Hound Group! Seems rather appropriate considering Fashion Week is also happening in NYC this week.

After all that hype, it was the favored Scottish Terrier, capturing her 112th Best in Show win during an insanely successful competing career! The Scottie was once again shown by Gabriel Rangel who, upon being congratulated, said: "No, it's all about the dog!" So true, so true, and today Sadie was good to you!

The Scoop: Is This Actually the World's Oldest Dog?

While Chanel was crowned the "World's Oldest Dog" by the Guinness Book of World Records just months before her death, news has come of another elderly pooch that could be the new (rightful) titleholder. This is Penny photographed on Sept. 4 in Ronsberg, Germany - according to her owner, Verena Wulf, she's 25! While it's trickier to verify age with unregistered, non-purebred pups for lack of records, I'm curious to know how her story plays out - do you think this pooch will soon get a cake and a press conference, too, or are you still satisfied with Chanel? Weigh in below!

Behind-the-Scenes: Chloe's Beverly Hills Chihuahua Wardrobe

While several of the pups of Beverly Hills Chihuahua sported fashions I recognized from doggie couture label Little Lily, for most of her clothed scenes, star pup Chloe wore handmade outfits of sleek and chic materials imported from Europe . . . all to give her a look modeled after Chanel, Valentino, and the like.

Costume designer Mariestela Fernández designed 30 dresses to fit a prototype of the canine actress (named Angel) and worked with the star's animal coordinator over three fittings to select the final 17 outfits used in the film. From nightgowns to ball gowns, most outfits featured specially created booties meant to stay on her paws (well, most of the time . . . wink wink to those of you who've seen the film already).

Creating Chloe's opulent necklace required three weeks and several design changes. At first, filmmakers wanted a large pendant in the front but found that knocked into her lil front legs. Then, they had to remove a second row of smaller diamonds because they felt it was too heavy for the Chihuahua's small frame. Lastly, they made three copies of the final design in case of mishaps. Oh yeah, in case you hadn't guessed, they were cubic zirconium not diamond. Now see the still stunning collar and fab fashions in the gallery below.

New Piggy Alert! Reese Witherspoon

That's right! Not a new puppy, Reese and fam took home a new piggy . . . and, seriously, how adoro is the little oinker?! While adopting a pig can be a challenge for many families – piggies need plenty of space to roam – if owners keep a close watch on their eating habits, a potbellied pig should end up weighing no more than 100 to 150 pounds. Methinks Atticus and Coco Chanel will have some new playmates for walks around the neighborhood! Check out piccys from their grand ol farm visit over the weekend when you read more.

Out and About: Hawaii's Cocojor

The cuteness continues on to Cocojor! This shop gets its name from the owner's two American Staffordshire Terriers (Sierra's Coco Chanel and Heir Jordan of Noah's Ark) and offers up authentic island apparel. Among their alohawear are dresses, shirts, and vests made in Hawaii . . . and made for doggies! The main location in Honolulu is worth a stop to pick up something to bring back for your pet or, if you're just dreaming of this vacation, their fashions can be found across the country.

Also, thanks to a tip from karisaamy check out Birken & Bailey’s Boutique in Paia if your travels take you to Maui. Named after the shop dogs (and, yes, the two Pekingese are usually available for photos), the store stocks variety of collars, carriers, and cookies alongside locally designed souvenirs.
