If treating a (human) sweetie this year, please be careful of any dangerous plants or chocolates within your pet's reach. In addition to the potential for poisoning (or sick tummies) from sweets, don't allow any access to sugar substitutes either! Of special risk to pets are gums or candies sweetened with the not-so-sweet sugarish alternative known as xylitol.

It's officially Halloween here on the west coast, and I wanted to treat North to a little something extra special. Now we know actual candy is bad for dogs, but Eye Candy by Fairytale Couture is very sweet indeed. Unfortunately, North is what pet toy packages would label a "strong chewer" ...in layman's terms, this just means it took him about three minutes to leave me a stuffing and punctured squeaker surprise on the floor.

Sponsored by the Freshpet Foundation, the event (and nonprofit) supports nutritional research in the areas of prevention, care and treatment of canine cancer.

It's important to keep your pets inside on Oct. 31 – animals can easily get spooked by the strange faces. If you're lucky enough to have indoor space, why not invite over your doggy's furry clique for a Howl-oween bash?

- Keep an eye on your pet. We already talked about pets in Halloween costumes, but, even if he's not dressing up, pay extra attention to his well-being.
