Pick the Cuter Pet For a Chance to Win $1,000!

Play my Which Pet Is Cuter? game to bring a smile to your Friday . . . maybe a little work break, too! The game shows two pets side by side, and it's up to you to click on the one you think is the cutest. Each time you select the pet with the higher "cuteness" score – based on our audience's votes, we don't have a secret cute meter – your score adds up! Need I mention, every time you play you're eligible to win big? We'll be giving away a $1,000 grand prize every month - you must be logged in, and you'll be entered once each time you play. (Check out the official rules here.) If you think your pet has a winning mug, you can add him to the site and he can be added to the game. Keep 'em coming because I love seeing new pets on our site!

Two Bizarre Ways to Put Your Dogs to Work at a Tailgate

It's nearly game time - since your dogs' tail waggin' tailgate is already in full effect, now it's your turn . . . to get them a gift that keeps on giving.

The <strike>stylish</strike> functional Tailgate Companion has six pockets to put your pooch to work - use it to hold grilling essentials, icy beverages, or even mustard and ketchup (if he's not already sporting it).

If that's not quite his style, swap out a normal neckpiece for the new Kurgo Wander Collar. Its leash ring doubles as a bottle opener. Kinda brilliant in theory yet, while there aren't any laws about walking a dog while drunk, I'm guessing this could violate an open-container policy on normal city streets. But at a tailgate - no problemo.

Do you think these items are more cool . . . or more crazy?

Do Tell: Have You Assigned an Animal a Gender?

Hi, Mary . . . umm, I mean Terry. This Aldabra tortoise living at Cleveland Metroparks Zoo arrived in 1955 and, since then, keepers assumed he was a she. Since these reptiles' reproductive organs are not usually visible, it took more than 50 years 'til they've got her gender lined up right, so she's now known as Terry instead.

This confusing situation got me thinking: with pets like fish, lizards, small mammals, or even stray cats, sometimes people assume a pet is one gender only to find out later she's something else entirely - that is if they ever find out for sure. I know I'm not the only one with a salamander named Sam (that could have properly been a Samuel or a Samantha) - so share your stories of pets with gender-specific names and unknown (or noncorresponding) genders in the comments below.

Source: Cleveland Metroparks Zoo

If you're already in need of some cute to get you through the day, here's Sidney to the rescue. This lil otter was temporarily living with a professional animal caretaker and enjoyed a wide range of dog toys. But, the best part comes when he finds the car keys - watch and enjoy!
To the Rescue: Can Adult Dogs Eat Puppy Formula?

Can they? Yes. Should they? Probably not. Although not that different ingredient-wise than adult formulas, puppy-specific kibble usually has more fat and protein.

The meat sources are likely listed first (ie, in higher proportion) for a growing body, which obviously makes it more appealing to an adult dog. The high protein and caloric content can make adult dogs overweight super quickly, so there's a reason the packaging says to only feed to the lil ones for a limited time - that meal for an extended period of time is damaging and dangerous to health.

In fact, some breeders of large dogs (especially those prone to weight issues or bloat) recommend not feeding these puppy formulas more than a few months due to the high content of all those things mentioned above. Did you feed your pets puppy food or move straight into adult bits for the babes?
