Primo Is First in My Book

Buon giorno, Primo! The three-day-old babe is the first of his species to be born at Rome's Bioparco Zoo in decades.

Buon giorno, Primo! The three-day-old babe is the first of his species to be born at Rome's Bioparco Zoo in decades. (Think you can guess where that name came from?) Although we've oohed and ahhed over a couple Grevy's zebras in the past, this lil one is a Grant's Zebra.

Of the three living subspecies of Plains Zebras — Grant's, Chapman's, and Burchell's — and all other zebra species, this is the most widespread in the wild, but also the smallest at about 660 pounds. Check out some vertical brown stripes on the body, horizontal ones on the legs, and hair sticking straight up as a mane and from large ears.

The Scoop: Meet Florence the Zebra Foal!

Look at those ears all big and absolutely adoro!

Look at those ears all big and absolutely adoro! Turns out Grevy's Zebras are not only the largest species, they're also known for their narrow stripes and round lobes. Meet lil Florence, the new foal born in Scotland's Edinburgh Zoo. Her birth is especially noteworthy, not just 'cause she's a baby animal (my fave!), but because this is one of the endangered zebras with fewer than 2,000 remaining in the wild.

No two zebra stripe sets are the same, so check out her pretty pattern close up compared to her mama, Emily, when you read more

Creature Features: Zebra

With all the talk about baby Giraffes, it got me thinking about other exotic African animals.

With all the talk about baby Giraffes, it got me thinking about other exotic African animals. Known for their black and white stripes and mohawk-ed manes, these desert, plain mammals are major power players when it comes to fashion, influencing pet products and gadgetry, even if they don't know it.
I wasn't too knowledgeable about Zebras when I was little, only that they were a special kind of striped pony. Or are they? Take my quiz on Zebras and find out!
