Growing Up Samson: Making Neighborhood Friends

Sugar staffer LilPeaPod has a usual route for Samson's daily potty walks – she heads over to a small patch of grass nestled a few blocks from her apartment. And since Samson is so darn cute (and totally irresistible), it seems he's found himself a few friends along the way:

Every day at lunch I take Samson on his usual potty walk route. We walk by a few shops on the way, but there is one salon in particular that Samson has taken a shine to. Why? I think it might be cause of the free doggie biscuits the awesome salon owner gives him when we pass by. I could be wrong, but I doubt it.

Aww, it's good to see that smooshy is making friends! I can say for sure that North knows exactly where to go in our neighborhood to load up on some free yums. Do your pups remember where the freebies are in your town?

Growing Up Samson: Training With Simon and Huey Treats

Training a puppy is one thing I can't say that I miss.

Training a puppy is one thing I can't say that I miss. It can be very time consuming and takes some serious dedication just to get your pup to "sit," "lie down" and "stay"! And don't even get me started on potty training! Yeesh! So recently, LilPeaPod shared her secret weapon to getting Samson to pay attention: Simon and Huey Training Treats!

Samson still likes his Zukes Minis, but after I got a free sample of Simon and Huey's from Babies, Samson was all over it! He really likes the Peanut Butter Molasses line that also stuffs oats, honey, and unsweetened carob into their soft little treat. He can't get enough, and now he even knows how to "stay"!

The great thing about Simon and Huey is they only use all natural ingredients, so you won't find anything in their treats or food that you can't pronounce. Plus, the company was started after the founders began making homemade food for their own pups, so you can trust they won't skimp on the goods. Congrats to Samson on learning the basics! He's getting so big, isn't he?

Pampered Pals: Auntie Em's Bunny Biscuits!

Sometimes it seems like dogs and cats get all the love with cute and crazy products all over the place!

Sometimes it seems like dogs and cats get all the love with cute and crazy products all over the place! I love spreading the love to our other furry friends, and freely own up to my soft spot for rabbits I've recently met or known in the past.

I was psyched to spot these bunny yummies in six varieties. Although the flavors range from Very Berry to Tasty Carrot, the main ingredients in all the snacks are oat, brome, and orchard grasses – the only sweet difference is the addition of organic fruits or veggies. I can't resist ordering one of these take-out boxes ($5) as a welcoming gift for my newest lagomorph friend!

Pampered Pals: Hand Painted Cat Treat Jars

There's just something about these jars from Modern Tails ($75-$85).

There's just something about these jars from Modern Tails ($75-$85). A tad on the kitschy side, I've always had a thing for hand painted pottery. Since I haven't seen a Color Me Mine in years – and I'm not sure my artistic skills are quite up to par – I'd love to just pick up a unique treat jar as a special gift for a cat lover. These jars are custom made so no two are identical and all work is done right in the artist's studio, with three paint applications to give them bright, long lasting colors. Check out some of my faves in the widget below – you can even have your pet's name added at no additional charge!

Stock Up on Pet Gear at World Market!

Who would've thought you could get such great stuff at Cost Plus World Market for your pets!?

Who would've thought you could get such great stuff at Cost Plus World Market for your pets!? North loved the Sojo's treats I picked up for him awhile back, and I certainly loved Patches' Pinot and the Pet Hair Lifter, too. When I stopped back in over the weekend, I purchased a glow-in-the-dark squeaky ball, and some of these pet wipes to freshen him up between bath times.

In addition to all the neat storage containers and accent pieces for your home, I have a few faves on my pet wish list widget below, like the Dog Tricks Book ($13). Could North really learn how to fetch a Frisbee!? I'm sure he's up for the challenge — he may be six years old, but he's still a 10 when it comes to energy!

Do You Buy Treats by the Pound?

Although I love (and at times, couldn't live without) the convenience of grabbing a bag of North's fave treats on my way through the grocery store, I sometimes find the urge to dig into those "treat by the pound" buckets at nearby pet store, Babies, or even Petco if I happen to be there.

Sometimes it ends up being more expensive, but it's kinda fun picking out the treats you want instead of tossing a bag into your cart. But does anyone ever worry about germs on those treats that are open to whatever is floating around, or is it just me being totally paranoid? How do you buy your pet's treats?

Mmmmm! Freeze-Dried Tuna Treats for Spoiled Felines

Cats and tuna go together like peanut butter and North.

Cats and tuna go together like peanut butter and North. If you've never fed a cat fresh fish, then you are missing out on a love fest like you've never seen! My first cat would eat tuna faster than I could say "come 'n get it!" and then look me over at every meal after that as if to say, "Where's my tuna!?"

You bet when I saw these freeze-dried tuna bits, I figured it would keep the love from the cat coming, without bringing the expectation that he would get it at every meal . . . 'cause that can get expensive! Made with freshly baked and freeze dried yellow fin and ahi tuna, the treats are preservative-free, contain no artificial colorings or byproducts, and are even free of salt and sucrose, which is more than I can say about some of the foods I eat! Plus, the price is right at $9 for a four-ounce can. And when kitty tires of tuna, just hand over the mahi mahi and ocean white fish version, made from 100 percent pollock. It's a win-win for you both!

Meet Lulu. Lucky Lulu always has snacks nearby as mom, FlamesofJune, was nice enough to share this nifty product with us.

Meet Lulu. Lucky Lulu always has snacks nearby as mom, FlamesofJune, was nice enough to share this nifty product with us. She shares, "My dog is young and still learning so I want to make sure I always have some treats on me. I used to put a few in a plastic bag or even right in my coat pocket . . . that got smelly fast. When I saw this cute little holder online, I had to order it! I love the fun color and how easy it is to clip onto a belt loop or even on her leash handle." To find out where to get it, read more

Out and About: Sprinkles Cupcakes

I've made no secret of my love for cupcakes so during my weekend in LA, Sprinkles was a must stop.

I've made no secret of my love for cupcakes so during my weekend in LA, Sprinkles was a must stop. With 20 (people) flavors, I was like a kid in a candy cupcake shop. And how sweet is it that they actually make puppy cupcakes with yogurt or carob frosting?! I was hoping a dog would wander by so I could buy him this treat and take his piccy while he enjoyed it . . . but, despite all the dogs I saw around Beverly Hills, there didn't happen to be any wandering down the street that morning. Boo. I knew this cupcake wouldn't make it home in my suitcase for North, but a new location will be opening at Stanford Shopping Center this summer, so I'll be able to drive down to the peninsula and pick up a cupcake for my pooch then!

Hey there, Isaboo! Are you excited for a yummy snack? North and I are psyched to learn what's cooking on Rachael Ray Feeds Your Pets, an hour-long special airing tomorrow at 9 p.m. on Food Network. In addition to watching Rachael prepare three homemade recipes for her beloved dog, we'll follow her on several other wild adventures including meeting some hardworking dogs on a Colorado cattle ranch, hiking with llamas, and checking out a fashionable New England pet bakery! I don't know about you, but I'm hoping to pick up some new recipes to add to my repertoire, and hear advice on safe and healthy food for animals from her on-hand pet nutritionist.
