Pet Photography Tips From Underwater Dogs' Seth Casteel

Even though you're probably familiar with the underwater dog images that took the Internet by storm earlier this year, the photographer of these wild and wacky pups, Seth Casteel, may not yet be a household name at your pad. But in fact, the pet portraitist has been on the photography scene for several years now, snapping endearing shots of pets for magazine covers and celebrity moms and dads. Yet it's the gleeful images of dogs plunging into swimming pools, chomping after their favorite toys, that have put Casteel on the map as one of this country's premier — and innovative — pet photographers.

We tapped the man behind the camera for his tips on how to take awesome action shots of your pet, so check out his pointers and some images from his new book, Underwater Dogs, available today!

Halloween

Snap to It! Halloween Costume Tips From a Pro Pet Photographer

Since we currently have a costume challenge in our community, what better time to gather picture taking tips than before the big day?

Since we currently have a costume challenge in our community, what better time to gather picture taking tips than before the big day? Photographer Jesse Freidin created the wildly popular Doggie Gaga project earlier this year — that's his cute Boston Terrier, Pancake — and he offered tips on both costumes choices and creation in addition to photography ideas to share with you.

PetSugar: Halloween costumes already have so much going on, how do I create a setting that limits visual distraction?
Jesse Freidin: If you’re going to put your dog in a costume and create a fun photograph showing off the costume and the dog, what you want is for the dog and the costume to really stand out. That’s the focus. You want to show off the costume and show off your dog being beautiful so there’s not always a need to make your background really busy. What you could do is work with a simple background whether it’s putting your dog outside near a wall that’s really simple. Then be really thoughtful and have a couple props, maybe there’s a pumpkin or maybe there’s some leaves. As long as your eyes are really drawn to the focus, which is the dog, that will make your hard work, stand out.

PS: What if I pass by someone else's cute dog on the street? How do I get a good shot?
JF: A good thing to do is get on their level and, before you stick a camera in their face because you’re a new person and it’s a camera and that can be weird, just let the dogs sniff you and get used to you for a second. Make sure you know their name and call it and hopefully they will look at you. It’s always an overstimulating environment to have lots of dogs, lots of people and costumes so keeping everything as calm and simple as possible is the way to get some really great photos.

Dogs

HOW Long Until Dinner?

It can be hard to photograph our black pug, since using the flash makes him so shiny and gives him demon red eye, and no flash usually means he looks like a black blob.

It can be hard to photograph our black pug, since using the flash makes him so shiny and gives him demon red eye, and no flash usually means he looks like a black blob. My friend Hannah took this picture, which manages to show that expressive face and those eyes we love so much. She got him to pose by saying his favorite word: dinner. So cruel, but it's a keeper.

Any tips for photographing an all-black pet?

Holiday

It's Not Too Soon to Think About Next Christmas

If you're treating a pet to special attire for your Christmas Day pageant dinner, it's the perfect moment to snap photos for next year's holiday card so you don't start scrambling way before the season begins again.

North posed for this dress rehearsal before I picked the perfect spot with great lighting for our final shot. After all, the stage is already set with stockings up and presents partially unwrapped and a happily gifted pooch on hand, too.

Mother's Day

Professional Pet Photography: A Great Mother's Day Gift

I love taking pictures of North .

I love taking pictures of North . . . even when he doesn't feel like sitting still for the camera! It'd be totally neat to get a professional to get some cute piccys, but I fear even the best professional would be left with close-up shots of his tongue or tail! So, I thought I would do some research and, while browsing, I came across this awesome LA-based studio called Shine Pet Photography that takes some a-ma-zing shots of cats and dogs alike. Coincidentally, Apartment Therapy thought so too and did a piece on photographer Grace Chon back in February. Seems like everyone is recognizing her talents and it's definitely deserved!

After drooling awhile over client proofs, and checking out her blog (which features even more cuteness than you can handle), it hit me that this would make a great Mother's Day Gift for a pet mom! What's better than an awesome and classy shot of your furry beloved to hang right next to your family photos? I can't think of anything I'd like more. How about you?
