There's no denying that penguins are seriously cute, and the flightless birdie has some pretty unique characteristics, too. Not only can they stay underwater for 20 minutes at a time, but penguins live and thrive in frigid temperatures. Celebrate everything penguin on Jan. 20, which happens to be Penguin Awareness Day, with this collection of interesting facts paired with adorable penguin-filled pictures. You'll be amazed at how smart, special, and silly these birds are!

It's a new year, and across the globe, zoos are taking stock of their vibrantly diverse menageries. Animals are counted, measured, and weighed in an effort to keep tabs on the huge critter populations housed within the zoos' walls. At the London Zoo, keepers had the daunting task of rounding up more than 18,000 animals representing 750 different species. But it's all for a great cause: once the tally is complete, zoos share the information to help breeding programs aimed at boosting endangered species populations.
Maybe it's the fact that Happy Feet 2 will hit theaters next month, or perhaps it's just that many moms seem to have Winter on their mind, but everywhere I turn, I'm seeing penguins! While penguins may be known for their black and white coats, today's trend is also bringing in the turquoise feel of the species' preferred climate. The arctic birds may not have the ability to fly, but they're sure making their way into nurseries everywhere! Check out some fun penguin finds to add an Antarctic splash to your lil one's room.

Most penguins have their own built-in wetsuits, but not this little guy! This 10-year-old Humboldt penguin lives at the Jurong Bird Park in Singapore, and has been losing his feathers since last year. To keep him warm and protected, he wears customized wetsuits! This isn't the first time we've seen a Humboldt penguin in a wetsuit, but this guy's condition seems to be lasting longer than usual. The suits are also supposed to encourage feather growth and prevent new feathers from falling out, so here's hoping he's on the mend. Click through for more cute photos of our featherless friend.
Let these friendly penguins bring a smile to your Sunday as the feathered fellas attempt to befriend fluttery butterflies. A hilarious game of follow the flying leader starts but the birds never quite grasp the colorful bugs — enjoy!
It's once again time for the march of the (baby) penguins in San Francisco! These three little birds waddle their way across the SF Zoo to their new home at Penguin Island. While 44 penguins live on the island already, these Magellanic chicks were raised behind the scenes at the Avian Conservation Center before making this walk of fame in front of an admiring audience.
