Spot the Differences Between Leopards, Jaguars, and Cheetahs

A jaguar by any other name would still look as sweet .

A jaguar by any other name would still look as sweet . . . but it wouldn't technically be a jaguar. You see, even though some people call out these species interchangeably, I've zoomed into the photos from our big cats quiz to illustrate the spotty difference between the three.

  • Leopard (Scientific name: Panthera pardus): These cats have a pattern that looks flower like — called rosettes — in large numbers with a slightly different color inside.
  • Jaguar (Scientific name: Panthera onca): Jaguars' markings also include rosetted dots but they sometimes have spots in the center as well as a darker, thicker outline. Typically, there are larger rosettes in smaller numbers on this species.
  • Cheetah (Scientific name: Acinonyx jubatus): No rosettes here, the Cheetahs have solid, evenly-distributed spots.

Go forth, kitty expert, there you have it!

Be Strong, Baby Leopards!

Two leopard cubs have found a safe haven at the Indroda Nature Park in Gandhinagar in India after the cubs were deserted by their mother a month ago in a sugarcane field.

Two leopard cubs have found a safe haven at the Indroda Nature Park in Gandhinagar in India after the cubs were deserted by their mother a month ago in a sugarcane field. Apparently local farmers brought the cubs to Forest Department officials, who are now carefully monitoring their health and diet in an effort to save them. The tiny cats are drinking up their nutrients from bottles, which just happens to be one of our favorite animal care moments. Let's hope they grow strong and live up to their big name!

Judge These Baby Leopards by Their Baby Spots

All clean! Would you have guessed that these were leopards without me telling you?

All clean! Would you have guessed that these were leopards without me telling you? (Hint: It's in the spots.) Regardless of whether you got the big cats confused with their similarly spotted relatives, we can all name cute when we see it.

The yet-unnamed babes were born at Germany's Hanover Zoo on May 31 — weighing in at just over one pound then, the duo's about three times that weight now. And, with Saia taking such good care of her lil ones, they'll grow healthy and strong in no time at all. Check out a few more pics up close before you make the final cuteness call.

Zounds! Zhongni and Zhang Jie Have Dazzling Baby Blues

Not only 'cause they're super cute, but the recent birth of these two North Chinese Leopards is extra special since there's only around 100 in captivity worldwide!

Not only 'cause they're super cute, but the recent birth of these two North Chinese Leopards is extra special since there's only around 100 in captivity worldwide! Native to Northern China (duh), the big cats have darker orange background fur than many other leopards and a unique pattern. If you look closely at their rosettes, you'll see a differently-colored spot within them – this is commonly found in jaguars but not in any other leopard subspecies.

Enough with the background facts, six-week-old Zhang Jie and Zhongni were presented to the city of Hamburg (and the animal paparazzi) at yesterday's naming ceremony at Hagenbeck Zoo. By raising these babes, the zoo will help establish new blood lines to continue a healthy captive population of the species and hopefully learn about (and solve) problems they face in the wild.

I couldn't resist gathering a bunch of photos to share. Look at those teeth, and for the rosettes, when you read more

Meet Baby Java!

OMG at the C-U-T-E.

OMG at the C-U-T-E. Meet Java, a new leopard cub — sassy, isn't he?! He's the new leopard cub at Siegfried and Roy's Secret Garden at The Mirage Hotel. This lil big cat is already clawing his way to the top . . . of the adorable scale. I could (obviously) go on and on considering my love for all baby animals, so I'll let the rest of the pictures speak for themselves.
