Witness a Wild Week at Crufts!

Yesterday's best in show judging capped off four days of canine cavorting at the 2012 Crufts Dog Show in Birmingham, England.

Yesterday's best in show judging capped off four days of canine cavorting at the 2012 Crufts Dog Show in Birmingham, England. One of the largest dog events in the world, this year's Crufts saw more than 21,000 canines compete for best in show alone. But Crufts is so much more than an arena dog show: the event boasts contests for obedience, agility, flyball, cross-country, and heelwork set to music as well as demonstrations galore that showcase the breadth of roles dogs play in our lives. This year, the UK's Kennel Club introduced stringent vet checks to ensure that all best of breed contenders demonstrated only the healthiest features and constitutions. As a result, 15 breeds were disqualified from this year's competition.

In the end, it was a lovely Lhasa Apso named Elizabeth who won over the judges for the best in show prize, with second place going to Brutus, a Newfoundland from Slovakia. Ready to check out the action at this year's Crufts? Check out our slideshow!

British Dog Show Says "No Makeup on Dogs, Please"

Forget about putting lipstick on a pig — in England, people are worried about putting makeup on dogs.

Forget about putting lipstick on a pig — in England, people are worried about putting makeup on dogs. Officials from this month's Crufts Dog Show warned entrants that they'd be on the lookout for any dogs who seemed to be getting a little cosmetic help. While show rules don't specifically forbid using makeup on the woofers, they do "forbid anything that alters an animal's appearance during dog shows," the Telegraph reports.

It might sound silly, but it's serious business. One company creates doggy-specific nose paint and hair spray for fur. Dog World magazine recommends using Clearasil to treat canine acne. And some owners of hairless dogs are smearing them with Nair. It all seems unnecessary and ridiculous — especially because last year's Crufts winner turned out to be a natural beauty. Can you ever imagine putting a dog through beauty rituals?

The Scoop: Charmin Wins Crufts!

Do you recognize this furry face?

Do you recognize this furry face? It's Cha-Cha-Cha, Charmin. (Sorry, I'm feeling punchy.) The Sealyham Terrier won the 2007 AKC/Eukanuba National Championship, captured the terrier group title for the 2008 Westminster Dog Show and now just won Crufts Best in Show! After last August's documentary claiming the Crufts Kennel Club allowed (or, at the very least, did not protect against) damaging breeding practices, both the RSPCA and major sponsor Pedigree pulled out of partnerships with this event, and the BBC television refused to air the show. I hope the organization evaluates and improves upon this issue going forward and, although I almost didn't cover this event at all, I decided that this stateside cutie deserves his moment to shine.

PetSugar's Crufts 2008 Cheat Sheet

The time has come for the largest dog show in the world — Crufts features over 23,000 pooches!

The time has come for the largest dog show in the world — Crufts features over 23,000 pooches! Sadly, it's not televised (live) and it takes place in England, so it's not something most of us can watch. Sigh. But don't worry, I'll be providing photos and updates from the four-day event as it progresses here on PetSugar! Before I got started, I needed to brush up on my dog groups because the organization of the Kennel Club UK is a bit different than the AKC and Westminster Kennel Club. While there are still seven competing groups, the members and names are switched up, and there are some breeds that we wouldn't even see here in the US. My little Boston Terrier would be part of the Utility group in this show. To see a brief description of the groups, read more
