The Scoop: The Most Common Breed in California Shelters Is Now . . .

Even though many people (wrongly) assume that all shelter dogs are big, that's just not the case everywhere, and there are more smaller dogs than ever in California.

Even though many people (wrongly) assume that all shelter dogs are big, that's just not the case everywhere, and there are more smaller dogs than ever in California. Recently replacing the breed most likely to appear at pounds — pit bulls — are the oft-teacup-sized Chihuahuas.

There are so many lil pups at shelters in the Bay Area that staffers have to take matters into their own hands and find other locations to hold the pooches. One Oakland shelter plans to charter a plane to airlift tiny pups to other states where they'll be more likely find homes (like that T'giving mission) and volunteers there have already driven over 100 Chihuahuas to shelters in Oregon, Washington, and Arizona.

Why all the extra effort? Well, bitty dogs are still in demand for many regions, and it's better to place as many pound puppies in happy houses, no matter the state. Are you surprised to see this breed pass pitties on the commonly found list?

Cuteness Continues on the Set of Beverly Hills Chihuahua 2

Hola, Papi! The loveable, rescued star of the original movie is back on set to film Beverly Hills Chihuahua 2!

Hola, Papi! The loveable, rescued star of the original movie is back on set to film Beverly Hills Chihuahua 2! I can only guess what trouble the tiny pups will nearly escape from (fingers and paws crossed) this time, but I'm willing to bet there still won't be any scrimping in the fashion department.

As you may remember, even though the other main canine stars like Chloe and Delgado had many furry understudies, just one pooch — real name, Rusco — played Papi who found a new friend and forever home with one of the flick's trainers.

Gidget Goes to Heaven: RIP, "Yo Quiero Taco Bell" Chihuahua

Arguably one of the most recognizable commercial celebripups, she's best known for a voice that's not her own.

Arguably one of the most recognizable commercial celebripups, she's best known for a voice that's not her own. The infamous male voiceover of "Yo Quiero Taco Bell" starred none other than the female Gidget, whose huge ears and bright eyes charmed a country in the late '90s, despite the controversial ad campaign itself.
Now, sadly, PeoplePets.com reports that the 15-year-old Chihuahua suffered a stroke on Tuesday night and lives no more. Although Gidget was "mostly retired," she would still accompany her trainer, Sue Chipperton, as recently as a February "Hollywood Animals" shoot for People:

Gidget's happy to sleep for 23 hours and 45 minutes a day. She'll lay outside when it's 105 degrees. I like to joke it's like looking after a plant.

Seems like she lived a happy life right up to the end, just relaxing and hiking but her alert expression always knew where the camera was — rest in peace, little superstar!

Hello There, Tom Thumb. You're One Lil Baby Chihuahua.

Yup, that's the real name of this adoro puppy who it literally pains me to look at.

Yup, that's the real name of this adoro puppy who it literally pains me to look at. Seriously though, Savvy must think I'm ill from my gasps and moans over here.

I've got a soft spot for all baby animals, and this lil guy happened to pop out smaller than his siblings in Scotland. Thought to be one of the smallest dogs ever born in the UK, Tom Thumb is just two inches short – make that long – of a world record. At only three weeks old, if he stays this small in coming months, who knows where the title will go . . .

Since I could blather on and on about his cuteness, I'll let the photos do the rest of the talking. Giggle has a video, and see him up close and personal when you read more

In the Spotlight: Mickey Rourke Has a New Traveling Buddy!

Since the passing of Loki last week, Mickey's remembered his beloved Chihuahua with a special charm necklace.

Since the passing of Loki last week, Mickey's remembered his beloved Chihuahua with a special charm necklace. We've heard him talk about how much he loves his many animals and now we're seeing another pal come out to play.

Meet Jaws, his latest partner in crime – they're on the road again! This white Chihuahua got his name because, when Mickey rescued the pup and went in for a kiss, the dog gave him two stitches in the face. He took him anyway saying, "You gotta give 'em hope."

Aww, I'm glad to see Mickey bringing one of his other favorites along for the ride and wish we could catch more glimpses of all of them. Sadly, most airlines have a one-pet-per-passenger rule for in-cabin travel but I'm betting and hoping we'll see much more of this Chihuahua. Charmed Life: Mickey Rourke's Special Way to Remember Loki

Although Loki couldn't walk the red carpet since Mickey Rourke's beloved Chihuahua passed away last week, I did spot a familiar face on that necklace.Seems not only does he keep this pup close to his heart, he wears her face on a charm around his neck.

Since he didn't pick up a golden statue last night, I also noticed his necklace at the weekend's Independent Spirit Awards, when he nearly teared up mentioning his "baby."

RIP, Loki: Mickey Rourke's Beloved Chihuahua Passes Away

Mickey Rourke touched a lot of hearts when he thanked his dogs – "the ones who are here and the ones who aren't here anymore" – at the Golden Globes, and sadly, Loki now falls into the latter category.

Mickey Rourke touched a lot of hearts when he thanked his dogs – "the ones who are here and the ones who aren't here anymore" – at the Golden Globes, and sadly, Loki now falls into the latter category. I was really hoping he'd bring this 18-year-old pup as his date to the Oscars on Sunday (as he mentioned last month), but his rep confirmed yesterday to E! News that the Chihuahua passed away on Monday night.

Anyone who's lost a pet knows how difficult this is, and even when it's a stranger in the public eye, it's hard not to empathize as well. I'm saddened to share this news with you and gathered the most recent photos of the duo that I could find, leaving lunch with designer Domenico Vacca at NYC's Nello restaurant on Feb. 12 – RIP, little Loki.
