Do Tell: Do You Agree With America's Pick For Obama?

Remember that poll to help America pick a pooch for Barack Obama?

Remember that poll to help America pick a pooch for Barack Obama? Although rescuing is usually a good option, his daughters suffer from allergies, meaning a hypoallergenic dog would do best in this home. Timed to coincide with his acceptance of the Democratic Party nomination, the AKC's released the results: a Poodle.

Personally, of the five finalists (Bichon Frise, Chinese Crested, Miniature Schnauzer, Poodle, and Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier), I was pulling for the mini Schnauzer — do you agree with the suggestion of any of the three sizes of poodles, or do you have a different idea?

The Scoop: Obamas Plan on Adding to the Family

In a recent interview with Access Hollywood, once again Barack Obama declared that, win or lose, their family would be welcoming a new addition: a dog!

In a recent interview with Access Hollywood, once again Barack Obama declared that, win or lose, their family would be welcoming a new addition: a dog! It seems everyone has an opinion on which pooch he should choose as the AKC released a list of five hypoallergenic dogs for his daughters' allergies (Bichon Frise, Chinese Crested, Miniature Schnauzer, Poodle, or Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier), and even animal rights activists share their opinions. In a letter to the senator, PETA expressed their view on why Mr. Obama should be looking at shelters instead of breeders:

Millions of Great American Mutts — the dog that should be our national dog — are set to die in our nation's extremely overcrowded pounds and shelters for lack of good homes. Adopting an animal not only saves a life, but demonstrates compassion, and the companion animal overpopulation crisis deserves attention from all Americans.

Although the Obamas have already expressed interest in rescuing a dog, I'm sure no matter which dog they choose they will give their new furry friend the love and attention it deserves. I can't wait to see the new addition!

What's Your Take: Did JFK Cats Receive a Death Sentence?

I remember the story of the "JFK cats" from last year: back in October, the Port Authority announced that they were rounding up the feral cats surrounding the New York airport and sending them to shelters.

I remember the story of the "JFK cats" from last year: back in October, the Port Authority announced that they were rounding up the feral cats surrounding the New York airport and sending them to shelters. That, of course, caused an outcry as shelters cannot really handle any more animals . . . especially the virtually un-adoptable feral cats. Animal advocates called for a more humane trap, neuter, and return process to save the animals' lives and allow them to remain in their habitats. However, the authority recently decided to halt that program and focus on rounding up the cats instead.

"They are telling folks that they are trying to adopt these animals out, but that is patently not true," said Patrick Kwan, New York state director of the Humane Society of the United States. "These animals cannot be adopted out. This is an extermination program that sentences them to death."

The authority originally said that the cats pose a threat to aircraft operation and that the 5,000-acre airport is no place for these feral felines. While I can understand the dangers of – and to – the cats if they remain, I have to agree that gathering them up and placing them in shelters does not seem to be a final solution with a happy ending. The Scoop: Shocking Reasons Cats Were Dumped in Shelters

I could never ever imagine giving up my four-legged baby and I know that all of you feel the same about your precious pets, which makes this news even more infuriating.

I could never ever imagine giving up my four-legged baby and I know that all of you feel the same about your precious pets, which makes this news even more infuriating. I caught a recent UK Daily Mail story about some shocking reasons cats are being dumped into the local animal shelters.

The RSPCA in West London bares all when trying to find forever homes for the unwanted felines, including listing why the now homeless kitties were brought to them. Reasons for giving up some of these beautiful cats range from having too long of a coat, not matching the owner's new carpet, and not wanting to pay a $10 a day cat sitter fee while they hit the beach for a vacay. I can't imagine how anyone could give up an animal because of these reasons, but apparently some people just don't have a heart. What's more, the number of animals left abandoned in the RSPCA's care rose 23 percent last year to leave 7,347 pets without homes which makes it even more important to extend your love to a shelter animal, but to first make absolutely sure you are ready for the responsibilities of a pet!

Would You Pick up a Stray?

Where do you draw the line between being a good Samaritan and being appropriately cautious?

Where do you draw the line between being a good Samaritan and being appropriately cautious? I already shared my experience with finding a loose, lost dog and, thinking back, it was definitely a dangerous decision for us to decide to help the scared, but tagged, pooch find his way home. In addition to the risk of biting you out of fear, a "wild" doggie or kitty could pass along a disease as well. I'm curious what your take is – would you pick up a pet roaming leashless on the side of the road? If you've experienced this firsthand (either finding one or getting one back), please share your story in the comments below.
