Up, Up, and Hooray! A Cool Airplane Birthday Party

Suzie Boluarte of Project: Party Perfect knew just what the theme for her son Caiden's second birthday should be.

Suzie Boluarte of Project: Party Perfect knew just what the theme for her son Caiden's second birthday should be. "We live near a small airport, and he loves going to the observation deck," Suzie says. "It's on the tarmac, and he gets an up-close experience seeing small planes and private jets take off and land."

Suzie took that love of planes and created an inventive party full of high-flying clouds, crafts, and cute treats. "Because it was homemade and not a commercially licensed, themed party, it was a lot easier on the wallet," Suzie says. "I got to mix and match products and choose my own color theme with a budget." Budget-friendly, DIY, and adorable? Sounds like a party we can get on board with!

A Dreamy, Vintage-Transportation Party For Enzo

Birthday boy Enzo loves airplanes, but for a party celebrating his second birthday, event planner Keren Precel knew she needed to take that inspiration to the next level.

Birthday boy Enzo loves airplanes, but for a party celebrating his second birthday, event planner Keren Precel knew she needed to take that inspiration to the next level. "Being a professional graphic designer as well as an event planner allowed me to create a custom-made, one-of-a-kind party package," Keren says. The vintage transportation-themed bash she designed is simply dreamy, full of personalized paper products, a beautiful backdrop, and a dessert table that would satisfy even the biggest sweet tooth. While the lovely sweets (chocolate mousse! caramelized cream puffs! a peach-vanilla buttercream cake!) make us jealous of this party's guests, we're betting the vintage airplanes, birds, and hot air balloons spread throughout the party were Enzo's favorite elements. Keep clicking to check out all the beautiful details.

Reach For the Stars With an Airplane Costume Made From a Cardboard Box

There's nothing like a handmade costume!

There's nothing like a handmade costume! If you bring your child into the creation process, he'll wear that costume with pride as he trick-or-treats his way around the neighborhood. A cardboard box provides endless costume possibilities that can all be made with items you have around the house. With little more than a cardboard box, some paint, and some scissors, we've created a wearable airplane that is the perfect prop to support your lil aviator this Halloween. Best of all, the process is also a way to teach your tot about recycling, because even if he's reaching for the stars, he still needs to care about planet Earth!

Virgin Atlantic Introduces In-Flight Calls — Uh-Oh?

The sweet sound of silence may be departing the friendly skies now that Virgin Atlantic has announced that in-flight mobile calls will come to at least 10 of the airline's routes by the end of this year.

The sweet sound of silence may be departing the friendly skies now that Virgin Atlantic has announced that in-flight mobile calls will come to at least 10 of the airline's routes by the end of this year. Even though Virgin has multiple US destinations, American law dictates cell service must be turned off within 250 miles of US airspace.

A company called AeroMobile will provide the in-flight cell access, which is only available for a limited bandwidth, meaning only a few lines can be accessed per flight. Virgin isn't the first airline to offer the power of mobile calls while en route to a destination: Qantas, Emirates, and Lufthansa also have AeroMobile on board.

With four airlines now offering passengers the opportunity to make calls in the air, is this the sign of an industry trend? How would you like an airplane full of telephone conversations on your next cross-country flight?

What's Your Take: Will Onboard Dog Bites Affect Air Travel For the Rest of Us?

When I heard of the case of a dog who bit two passengers on board a US Airways flight yesterday I immediately wondered how that was possible since pets must be kept in a carrier under the seat throughout the flight.

When I heard of the case of a dog who bit two passengers on board a US Airways flight yesterday I immediately wondered how that was possible since pets must be kept in a carrier under the seat throughout the flight. And, naturally, the dog did not escape . . . but was taken out of a carrier by its 89-year-old owner.

The 12-pound Manchester Terrier became agitated as its sedative began to wear off, which makes her decision to let him out seem even more thoughtless as a dog that needs medication to fly is obviously not expected to react well to the journey. This upsets me because many people view pets on planes as a privilege (albeit a pricey one) and not a right and those who ignore the rules make it worse for the rest of us who do not. I'm not trying to go overboard in defense of the dog, but the situation should have never escalated to this — the Newark–Phoenix flight was diverted to Pittsburgh! — and I worry that this fluke accident will hurt travel for the rest of us.

Reader Asks: Any Tips For Staying Sane on a Long Plane Ride?

Reader onlysourcherry posted a question in our SavvySugar community group.

Reader onlysourcherry posted a question in our SavvySugar community group. She asks, "I have a seriously long flight coming up: 14 hours! I'd love your suggestions to keep from going crazy." A long flight can be a drag, but I'm one of those weird people who actually enjoy long plane rides (yes, we do exist!).

My plane rides usually involve a lot of reading, whether it be newspapers, magazines, or that hot new romance novel or thriller that I just got my hands on. I usually like to keep my reading very light on the plane, because I see plane rides as sort of a brain vacation. You're up in the air and far away from the real world, so look at it as an exciting escape! I would also write in my diary, something I don't have the luxury of doing when I'm facing the daily grind of work. Oh, and I also sleep. A lot.

I have plenty more to add, but I'd like to hear from you readers — what do you do to stay sane on long plane rides?

Ask anything career- or budget-related — well, almost anything — by posting your questions in the Ask Savvy group, and readers and I will weigh in to support you.

Do You Order a Special Drink When Flying?

As we approach the end of Summer, chances are you've spent some time these last few months traveling via airplane.

As we approach the end of Summer, chances are you've spent some time these last few months traveling via airplane. Whenever I hit the skies, I treat myself to a ginger ale and cranberry juice mocktail. I try to avoid alcohol while flying (makes jet lag worse!), so this bubbly nonalcoholic drink is just the ticket. I feel a little high maintenance ordering the mixed refreshment, but it's become a ritual and a treat I only divulge in on flights. Do you have an airplane drink? Or do you stick to water or soda?

Prepare For Takeoff! What's the Best Time to Fly With Kids?

Flying high with small children isn't always seamless.

Flying high with small children isn't always seamless. Despite careful planning by the parents, some kids still unravel in the air. While lots of moms book flights late at night so their tots are too tuckered to complain, others make the airplane ride the day's activity. What is optimum for your family, and do you take fellow passengers (morning flights are often business travelers, etc.) into consideration?
