Cute Alert: Enigmatic Pygmy Pigs Thriving in the Wild

Pygmy hogs, described by one conservationist as shy and "enigmatic," stand only 10 inches tall and weigh only about 13-20 pounds. Few are thought to exist in the wild.

"The practice of indiscriminate dry-season annual burning and uncontrolled livestock grazing," said conservationist William Oliver, "threatens the last surviving wild population of pygmy hogs in Manas [National Park in Assam, a northeastern state in India] and, if continued, will doubtless also affect many other threatened and sensitive grassland species."

So in 1996, a captive-breeding program was started, and in 2008, 16 of the pygmy pigs were released into the Sonai Rupai wildlife sanctuary. While they're captive, they're largely left alone and fed very little so that they'll forage; this assures scientists that when they're let loose, they'll be able to survive. Here's to the survival of the cutest! We wish the little enigmatic piggies the best.

Found! Kelly Osbourne Loves Gooby, Mascot, and Sporky

Attention, attention, new puppy alert!

Attention, attention, new puppy alert! Kelly Osbourne has been spotted over the last couple weeks with this lil furball! The Shiba Inu already has her (his?) wings taking plane trips with mom. Looks like Kelly wasted no time in getting this pup the coolest gear. What products did they travel with? Find out below.

  • Even though temperatures don't drop that much in LA, the Gooby Winter Freedom Harness ($30) is a snuggly alternative to traditional reins made of synthetic deer skin and lined with faux fur for an off-to-the-mountains look.
  • Then there's no matchy matchy necessary here as the pup also sports a Mascot Old School Repp Lead ($42) in one of six preppy color combos.
  • Lastly, she adds a pink piggy to the leash. While Sporky ($15) may appear to be a poop bag holder to an untrained eye, it's actually a dispenser for wet wipes, great for keeping fingers (and paws) clean on the plane.

When Pigs Fly! Australian Pigs Show Their Stuff

I never thought I'd actually see a pig fly, but I guess anything's possible!

I never thought I'd actually see a pig fly, but I guess anything's possible! Fairgoers in Melbourne, Australia have been seeing pigs fly for the past nine years during the annual Royal Melbourne Show that takes place in September. During the exhibition, pigs compete in races and diving contests to see who is top pig.

The lovely porker shown here is Miss Porky Pig, and has been competing for the title against other favorites like Ham Bone, Bacon Bone, and Porky Chop. Unfortunately, each pig only competes for one season, so this is definitely her time to shine!

Cute Alert: Porcine Einstein

If anyone gets me off my bacon habit, it's going to be this ridiculously cute and smart pig, Mudslinger.

If anyone gets me off my bacon habit, it's going to be this ridiculously cute and smart pig, Mudslinger. I love him almost as much as Arnold Ziffle, the little stamp-collecting pig from one of the best shows ever made, Green Acres. (On a side note, Mackenzie Phillips and Lori Petty on the same show? Wow.)

PETA Releases Disturbing Pig Farm Video

Animal rights activists PETA, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, has released a highly unsettling, undercover video that shows the mishandling of pigs on an Iowa farm.

Animal rights activists PETA, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, has released a highly unsettling, undercover video that shows the mishandling of pigs on an Iowa farm. Among other things, in the clip — which I couldn't watch all the way through — workers hit female pigs with metal rods and slam piglets on a concrete floor. The farm supplies pigs for pork giant Hormel, who has acknowledged the abuses as "completely unacceptable." While PETA claims that pig farm abuse is widespread and common, leading animal welfare expert Temple Grandin disagrees:

I've been on many good farms, and the pigs are handled gently. This was blatant, deliberate animal cruelty. These people are sick. They need to be prosecuted. There are certain people that enjoy hurting animals and they should not be working with them—period.

Being a carnivore, I have to agree with Grandin and hope that the meat I purchase is from humane farms. It will be interesting to see what becomes of the video and if the USDA steps in as it did with the California slaughterhouse that mistreated cows earlier this year.
