Your Guess Is as Good as an Orangutan?

I'm no gambler so I'd say one can never really guarantee who'll win any sporting event — they're not called upsets for nothing!

I'm no gambler so I'd say one can never really guarantee who'll win any sporting event — they're not called upsets for nothing! Naturally, your guess is as good as mine . . . or an orangutan's?

To help predict the winner of the college national championship for football, the LA Zoo decorated papier-mâché figures filled with treats to represent mascots for the two teams playing in the BCS game on Thursday. This year, 30-year-old Bruno got to pick from a Texas Longhorn or Big Al, the elephant of the University of Alabama. As you can see from the picture, he immediately grabbed for the cattle. (Hook 'em horns.) After a brief investigation, he set it back down, demolished the Alabama elephant and then returned for the Longhorn. Ha.

While it definitely makes for a fun photo opp, it's also a neat enrichment treat for zoo animals — can you remember another place that consulted an ape to answer an important question? Find out when you read more

Cute Alert: Rishi and Emily Are BFFs

When Barry Bland, 38, took his 2-year-old daughter Emily to the T.I.G.E.R.S.

When Barry Bland, 38, took his 2-year-old daughter Emily to the T.I.G.E.R.S. Wildlife Education organization so he could take some pictures, little did he know she would become fast friends with Rishi, a 1-year-old orangutan. Pretty soon, Rishi and Emily were having tea, she was pushing him in a stroller, and then when they had to part, Rishi gave her a peck on the cheek. T.I.G.E.R.S. — a place where animals run free and, with supervision of handlers, humans get to interact with them — joined Rishi with an adoptive family when the males pushed him out of his biological one. Hopefully, if it's safe for Emily, he will see her again in the future! (Thanks for the send, AyrtonSenna!) Click here to read more and see more ridiculously cute pictures.

The Scoop: Rare Bornean Orangutan Born at Brookfield Zoo

Finally, I've found an endangered animal recently born at a US zoo!

Finally, I've found an endangered animal recently born at a US zoo! This baby girl entered the world on Oct. 6 at Illinois's Brookfield Zoo to proud mama, Sophia, a 27-year-old Bornean Orangutan seen here cuddling the lil one.

Orangutans are the only great apes from Asia Along with these animals native to Borneo, there's a closely related species from the nearby island of Sumatra. Their diet is made up of 60 percent fruit and other plant parts. In fact, I think I see mama munching on a flower – decide for yourself in the pictures below.

If you like Meerkat Manor, don't miss the premiere of Orangutan Island – it's similar to Kid Nation, except the reality here includes 35 orangutan "children of the forest" brought to live on an island, and learn to live together in a community.

The participating orangutans are from the Nyaru Menteng Orangutan Rescue and Rehabilitation Center in Borneo. Through this innovative project, they will have the opportunity to live on a protected island, where we can watch their development... and they learn to survive in the wild. Orangutan Island is the foundation for the largest primate rescue project in the world.

Check it out tonight on Animal Planet at 9 p.m. (ET/PT)
