Out and About: Rhode Island's Seal Watch Tours

Starting today, Save the Bay Narragansett offers hour-long Seal Watch Tours ($20) departing from Bowen's Ferry Landing in Newport, RI.

Starting today, Save the Bay Narragansett offers hour-long Seal Watch Tours ($20) departing from Bowen's Ferry Landing in Newport, RI. Seeing seals is much easier with ship-provided binoculars, and local species include Harbor, Gray, Harp, and Hooded Seals. The best time to spot them is when low tide falls in the middle of the day because that's when they stop feeding and "haul-out" onto their resting spots!

Educators provide commentary on the Bay's migratory seals while the boat heads to the popular haul-out near Rose Island. Tours run on weekends (and school holiday weeks) from November 1 through April 30, with departure times based on tides and weather.

Out and About: Rhode Island's Block Island

Welcome to Week Two of PetSugar's Out and About travel feature where we'll visit the state of Rhode Island!

Welcome to Week Two of PetSugar's Out and About travel feature where we'll visit the state of Rhode Island! Start the day by checking out the beautiful blazing red and golden amber fall foliage in the Narragansett Bay area before you (and your pooch) hop on the Block Island Ferry at Point Judith, just south of Narragansett. Leashed pets are allowed to make the hour-long trip on the traditional ferry, while small, contained pets can take the traditional or hi-speed ferry to this island.

Once there, wander the 20-plus miles of beaches (many open year-round) as well as The Greenway, a 30-plus mile network of trails – there are outdoorsy options for the true hikers, the leisurely strollers, as well as boats to rent and explore the 300-plus freshwater ponds. If you visit soon, you can see (and pup can bark at) the flocks of birds traveling along the Atlantic Flyway – often as many as 150 different species pass overhead!

Click here to share your own tips with PetSugar's Out and About travel group – and stay tuned as our week of Rhode Island continues!
