Zoos Ac-count For Animal Residents

One incredibly cute waddling penguin .

One incredibly cute waddling penguin . . . two incredibly cute waddling penguins . . .

It's a new year, and across the globe, zoos are taking stock of their vibrantly diverse menageries. Animals are counted, measured, and weighed in an effort to keep tabs on the huge critter populations housed within the zoos' walls. At the London Zoo, keepers had the daunting task of rounding up more than 18,000 animals representing 750 different species. But it's all for a great cause: once the tally is complete, zoos share the information to help breeding programs aimed at boosting endangered species populations.

London Zoo Animals Get Early Christmas Presents!

What do you get the zoo animal that has everything?

What do you get the zoo animal that has everything? More snacks, of course. Instead of just serving up special treats in a standard dish, keepers at the London Zoo created presents stuffed with yummy goodness. Mealworms, locusts and other grubs were served up as grub for Coatis and Meerkats and what a cute photo opportunity resulted.

London Zoo Welcomes First Lion Cubs in 10 Years!

Let's call these cubs Cute One and Cute Two — the 10-week-old babes were the first of their species born at the London Zoo in 10 years!

Let's call these cubs Cute One and Cute Two — the 10-week-old babes were the first of their species born at the London Zoo in 10 years!

The girl and boy lions were born to Abi, a 10-year-old lioness, and Lucifer, a 6-year-old male, and are critically endangered Asian lions. Even though nearly all non-captive lions live in sub-Saharan Africa, there's one small population — probably between 200 and 300 — in India's Gir Forest. So, with such a tiny wild population, every birth is a bundle of species-saving joy!

Galapagos Tortoises Are Messy Eaters!

Umm, someone's in need of a bib!

Umm, someone's in need of a bib! This Galapagos Tortoise just finished a snack in the new 'Giant of the Galapagos' exhibit at the London Zoo and seems like his haste made some waste all over his little turtle chin. Oh well, let's not point fingers at this 70-year-old (!) animal who weighs about 440 pounds — after all Dirk's joined by two female tortoises (Dolly, 16, and Dolores, 14) in hopes of starting up a breeding program at the zoo.

I guess slow and steady only counts for their actual motion, so see more pictures of sloppy eaters, Dirk, Dolores, and Dotty when you read more

Spring's not over yet as I can't stop spotting adoro baby animals.

Spring's not over yet as I can't stop spotting adoro baby animals. Like these two lil meerkats showing some love to a keeper. They owe Suzi Hyde quite a bit since she's been hand rearing the babes since their mama abandoned them! Awww, poor Lia and Roo are too cute making a debut at London Zoo! I don't know about you – but I'm thinking Meerkat Manor, UK edition, right?!

Cute Alert: Rescued Baby Owls

Meet Huey, Dewey and Louie from the London Zoo.

Meet Huey, Dewey and Louie from the London Zoo. This feathered trio of Burrowing Owls (they burrow underground and are active during the daytime) were being neglected by their folks, so Darren Jordan rescued them and acts as their surrogate dad. These guys look cute just sittin' around doing nothing, but it doesn't hurt that they're also called "owlets."

The Scoop: Welcome Vale the Titi

It's been at least a week since we've gotten our adoro baby animal fix here on PetSugar!

It's been at least a week since we've gotten our adoro baby animal fix here on PetSugar! That's way too long if you ask me so here's where Vale comes along. This tiny titi monkey was the first to be born in the new rainforest biome of London Zoo in late January. Parents Yara and Thiago proudly showed off their 4-week-old babe last week as the zoo made the announcement of this red one right before V Day. Titi monkeys mate for life and both parents share responsibility for the young one. In fact, often times, the daddy has primary care giving duties, but still brings the wee thing to mom for nursing, of course. This picture shows Vale resting on Yara's back while gazing into his pop's eyes — I couldn't resist sharing more closeup shots in a gallery when you read more

Creature Features: Two-Toed Sloth

Time to get your wild animal fix!

Time to get your wild animal fix! I just saw this cute picture of a not-that-common creature so I acted very non-slothlike and dug up some fun facts about the Two-Toed Sloth that you can tell just from looking at the picture!

  • Check out the claws. Sloths get their names based on the number of large claws on their front feet – either two or three – and both have three claws in the back! These claws help them grip and climb those branches upside down in a hand-over-hand motion.
  • Check out how quickly it moves. Not. This is the world's slowest mammal – so inactive that algae grows on its furry coat giving it a greenish tint as camouflage in the tropical canopy layer.
