If your pet has health issues that warrant special formulas, take note as the latest, voluntary recall affects cat and dog kibble distributed to veterinary clinics and specialty pet retailers. Although the first alert came last week for only the Iams Feline Renal Veterinary Dry Formula, it has expanded to that entire line and a few more from Eukanuba, too.

The specialized foods on this list are:

  • Iams Veterinary Dry Formulas for Cats and Dogs
  • Eukanuba Dog Dry Naturally Wild
  • Eukanuba Dog Pure
  • Eukanuba Dog Custom Care Sensitive Skin

Some products made at this facility with "Best-By" dates between July 1, 2010, and Dec. 1, 2011 have the potential for Salmonella contamination so discard the food and contact P&G for product refund information, remember how to report a problem to the FDA, and brush up on your Salmonella facts, too!

Although this warning doesn't affect wet food or treats, get the full list of kibble UPC codes here.

The Scoop: Iams ProActive Canned Cat Food Recalled

For kitties that come running at the sound of an Iams ProActive can opening, be warned: Proctor and Gamble issued a voluntary recall of this food for both cats and kittens.

For kitties that come running at the sound of an Iams ProActive can opening, be warned: Proctor and Gamble issued a voluntary recall of this food for both cats and kittens. If you see a can dated from 9/2011 to 06/2012, discard it and contact P&G for a refund.

Felines need thiamine (aka vitamin B1), and tests of the product show an insufficient level, putting those dining cats at risk for a thiamine deficiency if this is their only food. In early stages, this illness consists of excessive salivation, loss of appetite, and vomiting. As it worsens, symptoms include wobbly gate, seizures, and a downward curving of the neck (called ventroflexion). While risky, if caught promptly, it can easily be reversed.

Hilary Swank Has a Holiday Request For You . . .

In addition to her notable acting career, one thing that impresses me about Hilary Swank is that she doesn't just support a cause based on her celebrity, she actually stands behind it in her personal life, too.

In addition to her notable acting career, one thing that impresses me about Hilary Swank is that she doesn't just support a cause based on her celebrity, she actually stands behind it in her personal life, too.

As the acting ambassador to Iams Home 4 the Holidays campaign, she recently shared her request for others:

Growing up, I asked for a dog every Christmas, so the holidays remind me of those times I wished for a pet. Right now, I’m working with Iams Home 4 the Holidays, and we’re committed to finding homes for at least 1.5 million orphaned animals by Jan. 4th. So that’s what I really want this holiday season – for anyone considering a new pet to visit a local shelter or animal rescue organization. I adopted my two dogs Rumi and Karoo and they’ve been the best gift ever!

Remember, even if there's currently no room in your home for another furry face, there are plenty of other ways you can help shelters by donating or volunteering!

More Pet Food Problems

What is with pet food these days?

What is with pet food these days? Last week, rat poison was found in some pet food made by Menu Foods and almost 100 brands of pet food were recalled.

Now on an unrelated note, the FDA has issued a warning letter to Iams Co. that says some of its pet food contains an unapproved substance. Chromium tripicolinate is found in:

  • Eukanuba Veterinary Diets Optimum Weight Control/Canine dry
  • Optimum Weight Control/Feline dry
  • Restricted-Calorie/Canine dry and canned
  • Restricted-Calorie/Feline dry and canned

The FDA didn't ask Iams to recall these products, but they were strongly urged to remove the chromium tripicolinate from their products.

The FDA considers chromium tripicolinate to be genotoxic, meaning it can damage DNA and cause mutations and tumors. Are you kidding me? Then what's this doing in my pet's food?

These products are sold by prescription only for overweight pets, and the chromium tripicolinate is used as a metabolism enhancer. Iams did agree to remove this ingredient from its Veterinary Diets cat and dog food.

Fit's Tips: If you use any of the foods mentioned above, unfortunately it's time to switch your pet's diet AGAIN!!

IMPORTANT: Pet Food Recall

I am sick and tired of dealing with recalls, after the Oscar Mayer Chicken and the contact lens solution.

I am sick and tired of dealing with recalls, after the Oscar Mayer Chicken and the contact lens solution. Now 90 brands of pet food are being tied to kidney failure in cats and dogs. I believe in creating a fit family and that includes the pets!!!

On Saturday, Menu Foods, a Canada-based company recalled 50 brands of dog food and 40 brands of cat food. This includes pet food made by Iams, Nutro, and Eukanuba.

An unknown number of cats and dogs have suffered kidney failure, and already 10 have died after eating the affected food. As a precaution, Nestle Purina PetCare Company and Hill's Pet Nutrition Inc. voluntarily recalled some of their pet food that was made by Menu Foods.

The pet foods that were recalled were made with wheat gluten that had been purchased from a new supplier. There is suspicion that this could be the cause, but nothing has been determined yet.

The "cuts and gravy" style products sold in cans and pouches are among some of the affected products. Consumers are being advised to stop using these and the others on the list.
