Beagles

It seems that Korea just can't get enough of cloning, and this time it includes sea anemones and beagles. What does one have to do with the other, you ask? Normally nothing, but recently scientists have incorporated a glowing protein into a set of cloned beagles that makes them glow under infrared light. Not only does it make for an interesting (albeit creepy-looking) combo, but it also proves that you can insert specific genes into an animal, even if it's not from their own species.

This video I caught on AP, shows why the scientists engineered the beagles with the protein in the first place. Check it out, then tell me if you think this advancement is for the best . . . or for the worst.

If I ever needed advice on which toy to get North, I might first go to Linus for his expert opinion on which one is best. I mean, check him out: there's a monkey, a rope, a bone, an octopus, and is that a leopard print pig I see there? He's got them all, so he must know his toy business.

Well here's an award show I've never heard of – the 'Miss Canine Costa Rica 2008' contest! Held in San Jose (not CA), over 300 dogs came out to participate in the two-day pup pageant held by Spanish-language magazine, Pets Y Mas, and turns out there was more than one winner! This cutie pie is Lila, a female Miniature Schnauzer, who won the Miss Canine photogenic competition at the festivities. I know Halloween is a ways off, but come on, dogs in bumblebee costumes are adoro any time of the year! Clooney, a Jack Russell and pet of doodlebug, just turned one this month – could this be his birthday party suit? Clooney also seems to have a love for piggies, a preference he shares with another Clooney that we all know (swoon) and love.

Even after winning Westminster, a celebripup's role is never done! Everyone's favorite baying Beagle made talk-show circuit rounds, "rang" the opening bell at the Nasdaq stock exchange, and met tons of his admirers. Although the pooch has retired from the dog show world, he certainly keeps busy booking enough appearances to practically need his own agent! Among those canine close-ups was a stop at the Macy's Flower Show in The Cellar of Macy's Herald Square on Sunday. Clearly he's in great demand getting everyone from the President (who wants him to come to the Oval Office) to the St. Louis Cardinals (who want him to run out the first ball) to even Oprah clamoring for a visit – I have a feeling Uno mania isn't gonna stop any time soon so check out some more photos of this pup's fun weekend when you read more

It's Friday — and time for POTW! Because I'm still coming off my Uno high, I couldn't resist making a little Beagle my pet of the week! Meet Basil — pronounced as a word to rhyme with "dazzle" — and how he dazzles me! Rescued from Petfinder.com by WhiplashGirlchild, she picked out the cute pup when he was just 8-weeks-old, choosing this lil' guy because he was so calm. Unfortunately, Basil was chill because he was sick with a liver shunt but, many treatments later, the doggie is doing much better . . . and looking as adorable as ever!
