Each year the International Institute For Species Exploration announces a list of the Top 10 New Species for the preceding calendar year. Even though there are virtually thousands of new plant and animals found each year, an international committee of experts choose these 10 to help draw attention to biodiversity, the field of taxonomy, and the importance of natural history museums and botanical gardens in a fun-filled way. Eight of the 10 named this year are animals, check them all out in this slideshow!
“He was a little like a caveman at a tea party. . . He didn’t have a lot of training." That's how Leo's new owner described this pooch rescued from Michael Vick's Bad Newz Kennel. Like many of the dogs rescued from the horrific conditions, Leo's spending time with a special trainer to determine his placeability as a pet. Living with Marthina McClay, president of Our Pack, an advocacy group for pit bulls in Los Gatos, Calif, see what he's up to now in this video.
Boy, is he a success! After successfully completing five weeks of intensive training, he now shares his joy for life with cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy at nearby Camino Infusion Center.
Hey, those "Curb Your Dog" signs aren't just to remind you to pick up his poo, it's also because poochie pee kills plants! As a city dweller, I don't have a yard to worry about but one of our TeamSugar users needs your help: Brendelwoman has two big doggies that are creating unfortunate dead patches on her lawn when they go out. Their area's been getting lots of rain, and the grass gets watered every other day, so the problem liquid is fairly diluted. Since that's sure to end now that Summer's here, she's looking for suggestions to curb this problem pronto! Share any tips, ideas, or pet pill products in your comments below!
If you wanted to visit the world's largest fish tank, you'd have to go to Okinawa, Japan, home of the "Kuroshio Sea," otherwise known as the Churaumi Aquarium. Their fish tank is so humongous, it holds fourwhale sharks – the biggest fish alive!
Not only is the local sea life that's housed in the tank beautiful to look at, but the observation window at the Churaumi is a marvel on its own. The acrylic-resin window clocks in at 26 feet high by 73 feet wide, and almost two feet thick in order to hold the pressure of the water which is pumped in from 300 feet offshore. Don't the people in this picture look like fish food compared to these massive sea creatures!?
No matter where dogs live, or how much time they spend indoors vs. outdoors, all dogs are at risk for potentially deadly heartworm disease. If you own a dog, know these important facts:
• Heartworm-infected dogs can spread infection via mosquitoes.
• Dogs have been diagnosed with heartworm disease in all 50 US states.1
• At least 250,000 dogs test positive for heartworm disease a year. 2
• Treatment for heartworm disease is costly for owners and stressful for dogs.
• Untreated infections can lead to severe heart/lung/kidney disease – and even death.
You can help protect your dog from the dangers of heartworm disease by using a monthly preventive, such as HEARTGARD® Plus (ivermectin/pyrantel) — the #1 choice of veterinarians.3 When given monthly, HEARTGARD Plus also treats and controls roundworms and hookworms. Plus, it’s the only Real Beef Chewable with the taste dogs prefer 37 to 1!4
HEARTGARD is well tolerated. All dogs should be tested for heartworm infection before starting a preventive program. Following the use of HEARTGARD Plus, digestive and neurological side effects have rarely been reported. For more information, contact your veterinarian or visit www.HEARTGARD.com.
