The Dos and Don'ts of HDR iPhone Photography

Each iPhone 4S and 5 camera is equipped with a really cool HDR setting that can dramatically improve your photos.

Each iPhone 4S and 5 camera is equipped with a really cool HDR setting that can dramatically improve your photos. HDR stands for high dynamic range, and it essentially takes a series of images, each shot with a different exposure from darkest to lightest. HDR combines the best parts of the three overexposed, underexposed, and balanced shots to create a dramatic image with beautiful shadowing and highlights.

Do: use HDR for close-ups and outdoor portraits.

Compare the normal photo of ice cream on the left with the HDR image on the right. Oftentimes, HDR images look crisper, and colors appear much richer than the normal photo. Try HDR for close-ups and outdoor portraits, especially if the subject and the background have a harsh lightening difference. Click here to read more about HDR.

Common Sunset Photography Problems and How to Fix Them

Summer sunsets are unforgettable, but automatic camera settings hardly do the rich, pink, and golden tones justice.

Summer sunsets are unforgettable, but automatic camera settings hardly do the rich, pink, and golden tones justice. Take a look at three common sunset photography problems and the easy adjustments you can make to solve them.

  1. The picture looks boring: Photos need a point of interest, and dark silhouettes like people, palm trees, mountains, birds, or boats add a breakaway contrast to the vibrant sunset backdrop. Remember the rule of thirds, and keep all lines, subjects, and the sunset itself slightly off center.
  2. The colors are washed out: First, set the white balance to cloudy mode, so the camera will automatically bring out the warm, orange-pink hues of the sunset. Then set the camera to aperture or shutter priority mode. Shoot a little above and below the exposure bracket to experiment. Start with quicker shutter speeds and smaller aperture settings (larger number), and slowly work toward slower shutters speeds and larger aperture settings to bring in more light. If the camera struggles to focus automatically, thus preventing you from snapping the photo, then switch to manual focus.
  3. The photos are blurry: Bring a tripod. Slow shutter speeds and large aperture settings (smaller numbers) will turn out blurry when you're holding the camera in your hand. The tripod stabilizes the camera, allowing it to soak up all the glorious golden light.

5 Ways to Make Nature Photos More Memorable

Whether you're in a field, the mountains, or a forest, capturing the beauty of nature can be a difficult task.

Whether you're in a field, the mountains, or a forest, capturing the beauty of nature can be a difficult task. The grandeur of unusual plants, rolling hills, and tall trees can be lost without proper framing, good lighting, and the right camera settings. Avoid taking dull pictures of scenic hike finds with our five tips.

  • Alternate between landscapes and close-up shots: While walking along a trail, shift between taking landscape shots that encompass the whole environment and close-up shots of wildlife, interesting plants, and other small details.
  • Take interesting landscape shots: The key to a good landscape shot is composition. For the easiest setting placement, simply program the camera to landscape mode. Then find an object to focus on that breaks up the monotony of the landscape. Alternatively, use natural lines to draw the viewer into the shot, as seen in the photo of the redwood trees to the left. The viewer is pulled into the shot through the circular pattern of the tree trunks.

3 Tips to Better Landscape Snapshots

Whether it's towering mountain peaks or an endless island beach, landscape photos are a quintessential vacation snapshot.

Whether it's towering mountain peaks or an endless island beach, landscape photos are a quintessential vacation snapshot. If you end up with pictures that don't do the breathtaking views justice, use these three simple tips to capture the glory of the landscape and create stunning photographic memories.

  • Landscape setting: Seems almost too obvious, huh? Keep things simple by programming the camera to landscape mode so the camera will keep both the foreground and background in focus as well as automatically balance the camera's light meter.
  • Composition: Even the best settings can't compensate for good composition. Look for a point of interest to break up the monotony of the landscape like a bridge, a huge rock, or a bird — otherwise, even the grandest view will appear boring to the viewer. Then, move around until the natural setting serves as a path toward the point of interest. In the above photo, the trees in the foreground curve to frame the Golden Gate Bridge. When capturing water, look for snaking "S" shapes, to slow down the viewer's eye.
  • Wide-angle lens: Using a wide-angle lens exaggerates the depth and width of the photo, so objects in the foreground appear to be much closer and objects in the background appear smaller. This creates a "getting everything in" effect and also dramatizes the scale of the landscape.

What's your number one rule for capturing a perfect landscape picture?
