When everyone in your family is out of the house for the day, where do your pets stay?

My boys (big black labs) usually hang outside we have a large yard with a concrete wall around it. It can get hot down here though, so we have doggie door into my husband's air conditioned shop, where they have food & water. That way they can decide for themselves if it's too hot outside!

Who on EARTH voted for the crate option?? Am i getting the wrong impression, or is that really like a box with a lid where you would stuff your animal into?? :o My doggy is free to go inside and outside as he pleases! ;)

My cat gets free range of the house when I'm gone. She's really good though she never makes a mess or anything!

Bubba is free to roam the house but he has slowed down a lot in his years and recent sugar drama so he mostly just sleeps I think because when I get home it looks like he has barely moved.

They're at home, but they don't have free range of the house, they are gated into the family room and kitchen.

I have what I call "joint custody" of my dog with my parents. My dog would be very unhappy if he was left by himself all day in my apartment so he stays with my parents during the week since my Mom is home. I take him with me on the weekends. It's the best option for him, plus there are two other dogs at my parents house so he has his friends to play with all week and one-on-one time with me on the weekends. Oh, and he's got free range at both places.

My dog has free range of the house, she's a really good dog and never gets into anything. She likes to lay on a chair next to the window, she puts her paws on the window seal and lays her head on them. She either just looks outside or takes a nap and if my mom doesn't work she will come pick up the dog for a play date with her dog, they're spoiled rotten and they know it.

She used to have free range of the house - until she started peeing everywhere when we moved. Now she has the kitchen with her big snuggly bed and percy the bear to play with :)

At 9 years old, Maya is completely trustworthy and has free range of the house. However she prefers to snuggle up on my son's bed and remains there for however long we are gone!

Jimmy, my JRT gets access to the kitchen, living room, dining room and sun room. He has a favorite blanket which he carries around the house following the sun so he can sun bathe ON his blanket!

My dogs stay in our pool house (trust me, it's not as glam as it sounds) when we leave. We call it the Doggie Day Spa b/c they hang out and watch TV all day.

Fuji has free range of my apartment. I think it helps keep him from losing his sanity; he gets to play with his toys, go walk around or sleep on my bed. He hasn't destroyed any furniture...but he did chew up some sandals/shoes, so I have to make an effort to put shoes/sandals away from his reach.

My dogs are not tethered- they are in a fenced in yard. Its a really good way for them to injure themselves. Also I live in California and it is illegal to tie an animal to an object for 3 hours or more

My dog is crated when I'm not at home, but only b/c the times I have left her out to roam about my condo, she's managed to chew up a bunch of things! A crate isn't cruel...in fact, my dog prefers it when I'm not home b/c she feels safe inside it and she can't possibly hurt herself. She's actually less distressed when I do make it home. I make sure to put her favorite blankie in there with some toys, treat,s and water.

jessness - thanks for the reassurance. on another note, if you do keep your dogs outside, dogs suffer terribly when they are tethered or chained, isolated in the yard. these dogs become lonely, bored, frustrated, and neurotic. the centers for disease control has found tethered or chained dogs are 2.8 times more likely to show aggression.

My dog is a German Shepherd and Sharpei mix. At four, he'd probably be OK inside by himself all day, but I don't want him to have to hold his potty that long. So, he stays outside while I'm at work. He has an igloo if he needs someplace warm or out of the wind. At night, he's inside. He's usually wherever I am. He even sleeps on my bed. Sometimes I think I don't have a dog. I have a Bed Hog!

sugar gets her own room to play in while we're away. we gave her free range of the house at one time.... with horrible, destructive results. it'll be a while before we let her loose in the house unsupervised again.

poom- my dogs are in the backyard while we are gone. They have a covered porch for protection but they are defintely brought in when there is bad weather (really hot or rainy) But that brings up the point that people need to consider the weather when picking out a dog. A dog bred for cold weather is not going to do well in the desert. Also a dog with short coats are more than likely not going to do well in the snow. Its common sense.
