Is Your Dog Registered with the AKC?

I love to watch the purebreds at Westminster . . . but I love the mixed-breed pooches, too! Many competitions like Westminster (and the AKC) are limited to those member pups, but the American Kennel Club is considering a new program giving those mutt owners a chance to participate in some agility events and have access to an interactive website of their very own. While they're currently gaging interest with a survey, many dog owners still don't join this organization (even with purebred doggies), how about you?

One is, the other is registered with some oddball organization. United All Breed, I think. I never planned to show them, but if I ever lose either one of them I have crazy amounts of paperwork to show they're mine. I save everything- vet receipts, registration papers, even the packaging from their microchips.

Our breeder gave us the papers and registration form, but we'll never breed or show Brando so we didn't bother.

Yes both of my shih tzu are registered. I dont breed or show I just wanted to register them.

well i have an ex-racing greyhound and I have no idea where she might be registered...prob just a greyhound database (I did find her based on her tattoos). but mutts rule!!

We adopted our dog from the humane society, so no papers for him. He have no interest in showing, just wanted a companion. We have a great lab mix and there's no way I would be happier with him just because he was purebred and papered.

I wasn't interested in showing or breeding so I decided to save the $20-whatever bucks and know that my dog is who she is and i love her either way.

AKirstin is right. My parents whippet is registered. They got her from a very reputable breeder. My pup is a mutt from the humane society. They're BEST friends. Anyway, when you register your pup with AKC they give you a trial membership with a pet insurance place and a free vet visit certf. That's what I remember my parents getting. Also if someone were to find her out and about, I'm pretty sure they could find mom and dad through the AKC registry. She's micro chipped too.

If you own a purebred dog, you hopefully procured your furry pal from a reputable breeder, not a backyard breeder or pet store. In which case your dog should already be registered for you. Good breeders take a lot of time, effort and money to breed carefully, so keeping track of bloodlines is vital.

Mine is registered, but I don't recall receiving any benefits.

Nike would have to get additional silly names aside from "tard dog" or "beer monger" and "fart monster" to be registered. Plus, I don't think they would want us to register a big German/Australian shepard who think she's a small house cat. My sister AKC cocker spaniel was Miss Charlotte Erica Healy-Sussex (Charlotte or Hoover for short) and my brother-in-laws Doberman was Pandemonium Duchess of Kent Wilma Something (Pandi for short). He thought every other name except for Pandemonium was ridiculous.

Unless interested in breeding, showing, or competition, I don't see a point. I have a local obedience training competition here, with MUCH lower cost to join.
