Which Fruits Are Toxic to Dogs and Cats?

So many delicious fruits come into season during Spring and Summer, but if you're considering a tasty fruit salad for yourself, I hope you remember that some sweet treats are poison to pups! Before you serve up something unsettling, test your knowledge on different fruits and their toxicity to pets!

Apples aren't toxic and are in processed pet kibbles and canned foods. Seeds, stems and leaves shouldn't be eaten by people or dogs though.. I guess the ASPCA thinks the average pet owner is pretty dumb???

Again, read what it says for Apricots: TOXIC TO DOGS AND CATS. But read the explanation "Like many other pitted fruits, apricots contain cyanide in stems, leaves and seeds" the cyanide is very low but even people shouldn't eat stems, leaves and seeds. Apricots are also found in dog foods, but not the pits hopefully. ASPCA says avocados are toxic also, yet some brands (AvoDerm for example) use them in the dog food. Read all the lines (and in between the lines) people!

Some of those are wrong or misleading..lemon oil for dogs is a great insect repellent and for cherries it says "Stems, leaves, seeds contain cyanide, particularly toxic in the process of wilting" while fresh pitted cherries can give antioxidants to dogs. Plum fruit is fine for dogs (of course not the seeds and stems lol), apples are in kibbles even, and oranges contain bioflavanoids, good for dogs. Always take what the ASPCA says is toxic with a grain of salt, and ask your vet, (preferably a holistic vet!)

Wow! I knew that pets shouldn't eat people food anyways but this was great to do! I love my kitties and I dont want them to eat anything they shouldnt!

These are good things to know- I got most of them wrong! I'll have to be sure our family pup steers clear of these toxic fruits!

I got others right, except the apple. It's toxic, but carefully peeled not at all.. come on! You could have added it as safe, then something like "apples are safe, but remember to take off/out the seeds etc. before feeding it to the dog." Cause the apple itself doesn't do harm it would have been more correct.

Some of your answers do not make sense. If seeds are bad, then why are they o.k. in some fruits. Glad your not my pets vet!!

I have heard that turkey is toxic to dogs. if this is true, why are there so many "healthy" dog foods out there with turkey?

I agree....I wish they'd just give us the info rather than make us take a long quiz. It's good information though. I used to give my dog my apple after I finished. Not anymore.

12/12! - About the oranges... It's weird, you know, but my sister's cat is obsessed with oranges. I kid you not. I can assure you, we certainly don't feed them to her, or any of the fruits listed here. But for some reason that cat will hide, watch you eat an orange, then leap on your hand to lap up the juice before you can wash them. Got to a point where we can't eat them in front of her - we go into another room, eat them, then wash our hands before having ANY contact with that darn cat! - My cat (who passed away a few years ago at age 15) used to be obsessed with corn-on-the-cob. She would hide, wait for you to turn away from the counter, leap up & take a corncob... then streak away, hissing, in order to eat it hidden in place where I couldn't reach her. I remember almost having a stroke when I came back from getting water (she WAS outside but somehow sneaked in) to find her eating my corn chowder soup! - I still miss her & her personality SO MUCH! -

why do you guys make quizzes so that you have to see the answer after every one? there are 12 questions on this one! for me, it makes it kind of a drag to take the quiz.
