My pup was fixed shortly before his first birthday, much later then many of our doggie pals – when was your pet fixed?

My vet told me that small dogs go into heat at a younger age than larger dogs. Unfortunately, we did not know this when we got our little doggie. We had planned to have her spayed between 6 and 7 months of age. She went into heat a week before her appointment, and we had to wait until it was over before they could spay her. She was miserable! She couldn't go to the park while in heat, and she kept humping this one stuffed animal we had and growling at it. It was kinda funny, but she was very frustrated! We had her spayed ASAP after that! With our other dog, the humane society advised us that he could be neutered at 4 months of age. Perhaps that is too young judging by what most people are saying on here. Happily, he is now 2 1/2 and doing just fine.

Scout was neutered last week- he is a little over 6 months old. The vet wanted to be sure that his baby teeth were out. I'm so glad someone warned me that when they lose their baby teeth, you can find them anywhere. I might have had a heart attack otherwise.. there were teeth everywhere.

Well, not fixing your cat is your choice i guess but i hope she never gets out even for a few minutes. Not fixing your dog is a mistake though- they can get certain cancers and don't live as long. Plus they get dominant.

Megbucks3, the humping thing is more of a dominance thing and is also a part of normal play. But it can be embarrassing! My spayed female dog still does it sometimes.

I waited a bit too long and Ruby got her "period". I feel bad about that. The vet said that every time they go into heat you increase their chances of getting cancers of the reproductive system. I was so scared to have her go under for fear of complications. But it worked out fine and it was the first (and last time) she was ever calm :)

My cat, Nugent, was neutered before a friend of a friend gave him to me. My puppy, Charlie, was neutered 2 weeks ago, at 9 1/2 months old. I waited that long because I was on vacation and my vet boards him so he received a week of vet care and supervision. The vet made me wait 2 weeks before I could take him back to the dog park or let him swim. He is still intent on humping male dogs at the park but I hear this urge will lesson when the testosterone cycles out. (One can only hope...or at least my poor cat can only hope he gets over the humping phase)

Merlot, my persian isn't fixed. She's always indoors. Viva, our puppy, isn't 6 months yet and thats when we're planning on getting her fixed.

Bridget was a rescue, so she wasn't spayed until we got her at 10 months. There are just too many animals in this country without homes for me to even consider not having it done! Not to get too preachy (to each her own), but knowing there are so many animals sitting in shelters, many of whom will be euthanized, because people were not responsible enough to spay/neuter just makes me feel incredibly sad... Ditto for choosing to buy a pet instead of adopting. I don't mean to offend anyone, and I know that bringing a pet into the family is a big decision and everyone has to do it the way that works best for them, but I don't think we should be supporting even reputable breeders until the stray pet population gets under control in this country. Every time you adopt a pet, you save a life!

We adopted Roxy at about 5 months old and the shelter wouldn't allow us to take her home "un-fixed." I think that those of you who haven't fixed your dog/cat should really consider it. It doesn't matter if they don't hump, or if they never go outside. There are tons of animals in shelters that were "whoopsie" puppies/kittens. Just because you watch over them, doesn't mean that they won't try and get some action. ;) I kind of think it's a little irresponsible to not fix your animals and I'm sure I'm not alone.

My vet suggested that she have one season before she was spayed, also being a Yorkie they can grow double teeth so poor little thing had everything done on the same day, Also because the hair grows inside the ear while she was asleep all the hair was taken out and is now kept under control by her groomer. I think spaying is very important to stop unwanted puppies also helps stop breast cancer that bitches are prone too. She has to go back for a dental in October when we get home from our holidays, so she won't be talking to us for a while.

our first cat went into heat around six months so we promptly had her fixed. it was quite annoying. we had our second kitten fixed a little bit earlier, as early as we could so we wouldnt have to deal with that AGAIN!!

I am probley a bad parent but i didnt fix malano and dont plan on it. I walk him and take him on runs and stuff but he's not a humper. plus I kinda feel bad about it. oh yeah and he's 10 months

We were lucky that the vet was willing to do the spaying and the teeth removal in the same operation - although LB was one groggy puppy for two weeks with all the pain meds!

We spayed LB at seven months - we also had five of her teeth removed since she had too many! We kept thinking they were baby teeth that hadn't fallen out, but apparently she had an extra set or lower and upper canines, plus another extra tooth!

One of my puggles was fixed when she was over a year old but that's because I didn't have her when she was a puppy, she got fixed when just before I got her from a pug rescue and my other one got fixed when she was 6 months old. Didn't want to deal w/ the menstrual cycle my is enough!

We got my 2 cats from a shelter at 6 months and they (sister & brother) were already fixed and as for my papillon we found her on the street & the vet guessed that she was 3 months old at the time and with the Insurance Plan that we have her on it required that she got fixed before she turned 6 months so we got her fixed right before the estimated 6 month mark!

Like Newtown, we got B-Bop from the humane society. He was 8 weeks when we got him and already healed, so who knows when they did it. But he's 2 now and perfectly healthy so hopefully we don't have any problems. But he's awesome, no humping or agression or anything. My parents dog was spayed when she was like 9 months to a year. The breeder told them it was better to wait a bit for that breed (whippet). They don't handle medication very well being so skinny and even waiting until she was older, she still got pretty sick and wouldn't eat for a couple days.

Sadie girl came from a shelter. I got her around 4 months. I am guessing this because she started losing baby teeth on my couch almost as soon as I got her! She was already fixed. I just had to get her a rabies shot and a microchip!

Our vet suggested that we wait until all his adult teeth came in so that he could pull any baby teeth that hadn't fallen out at the same time that Fitzroy was under for neutering. It made sense to us to only have him under anesthesia once instead of twice if it was an option.

Anniebananie just so you're aware, most people don't just neuter their pet due to humping. They neuter their males to keep them from impregnating females, which leads to the higher amount of pets in our shelters. I'm not aware of your lifestyle or where you take your dog or if he ever leaves your home, but if you're taking him on walks or to a dog park, he should be neutered to avoid this possibility. Also neutering lowers aggression, the tendancy to stray, the possibility of cancers and marking.

When I got Newton when he was four month old, I couldn't wait to have him neutered. He loved to hump and pee on everything in sight. For some reason, most vets here wouldn't neuter him before 8 months. When he turns 6 months, I took the day off and drove 2 hours to have him neutered (aswell as having his declaws removed, and microchipped). He has since not humped anything, and I've only seen him mark indoors twice (Thank god). Axle was neutered when he was 8 weeks old. The Humane Society we adopted him from doesn't let their pets leave the shelter unaltered, which I respect. I'm hoping that by feeding him a quality diet, and keeping him fit, we won't have to worry about any health problems (on set by the early neuter) in the future. PS. Thanks for posting this sugar. I think it's very important to spay and neuter our pets these days, especially with the large amount of homeless animals in our shelters.

I haven't, he doesn't hump things and he is three if it ever becomes an issue i'll re-visit the topic.

We got him fixed on his second birthday. He had one undescended testicle, so it would require a major abdominal surgery. He'd had major liver surgery when he was 10 weeks old and the vet wanted to wait as long as humanly possible before cutting his tummy open again. So we waited two years. They snipped off the one normal testicle and sliced open his little belly to get the other testicle, which was up by his kidneys!

I heard somewhere that if you neuter a male dog prior to their full grown size they can have problems with arthritis and being overgrown and things later in life. My vet said there are studies that show that but nothing conclusive and they still recommend six months but would neuter when we were ready. We waited till they were close to a year, because I didn't want to risk any future problems. Lovely did you try posting an ad on petfinder for your cat? Every time my sisters cats go missing she puts an ad on and for some reason they turn up the next day. I'm sure its just luck/coincidence but it might be worth a try. Good luck!
