Over the weekend, pets and animal lovers celebrated World Pet Memorial Day at the country's oldest pet cemetery, paying their respects to dogs who served during wartime. Opened in 1896, Hartsdale Pet Cemetery was the first formal burial ground for animals, founded by veterinarian Samuel Johnson, who was also instrumental in organizing the ASPCA. Today, the cemetery houses famous pets, pets of celebrities, the dog from down the street, and the War Dog Memorial, a centerpiece of this weekend's celebration and an homage to dogs in service during wars, rescue efforts, and other conflicts.
Pet parents often outlive their companions, and their loss can be heartbreaking. Have you lost a pet friend? How did you (or do you) pay your respects?
