Tick, Tock Goes Your Biological (Pet) Clock?

Many couples view pets as precursors to kiddies, how about you? There are many factors that go into any one person's – or family's – decision to get a pet (like we saw on Petfinder) and oftentimes the impetus seems to come from a desire to nurture a new one. When you got your pet, do you think this phenomenon had anything to do with it?

I have had a dog since I was a little girl. I am 49 now. My first pet was a rooster. My sister had one too. Both of the roosters didn't like either one of us. Only our Father. Everytime we walked outside the rooster would chase us. My parents got rid of the roosters,then we had a dog. I am divoced now. I have a 25 year old boy. But he is getting married and no longer lives here. I have a Miniture Schnawzer. He is 11. I dont think I could ever replace his love. He is spoiled rotten. A GREAT DOG and COMPANION! I Love him so much.

I just loved animals all my life and couldn't imagine living without sharing my life with them, even if my fiance was allergic. But now that I'm more mature, I'd only get another animal for the RIGHT reasons.

I have absolutely zero desire to have children. However, my urge for a puppy is relentless! It seems to be like what you hear of women's biological clocks ticking... it's all I can focus on sometimes! It's just happened over this last six months (I just turned 26). Heck, a few years ago, I would have described myself as NOT a dog person. Very very strange.

Ever since I was 5 I have had dogs nonstop. And now at 24, I am a whole year without a pet since i lost my bull terrier last march. It's very hard to be used to their companionship and then to not have one. I'm begging my fiance for another dog for Christmas but he is very reluctant.

I was always a dog person and he was a cat person but after we were dating for a while, we both wanted a pet that we could call "ours". We ended up with a cat (easier in a apt.) and love it. Kids?...maybe in a couple of years.

It wasn't necessarily that our clocks were ticking, but that we needed to expand our family. We've been together for 3 years and marriage is still far off for us financially, so agreeing to get our pup (that I had been asking for for two years, mind you!) was a way for us to show that we're in this and committed.

I came into the relationship with a sweet doggie. She passed away last year and I needed a new one much sooner than my husband, but after a long heart to heart we went to the SPCA and he fell in deep down love with our new doggie. We used raising a tiny puppy as practice for the baby we are due with in a few weeks.

i find it impossible to live without animals. as soon as we got married and were in a place that would let us, (and away from allergic roommates), we got our little furbabys.

I've had animals my entire life so it always seemed natural to have them. But my boyfriend and I plan to just have pets and no kids, so I guess in a way they are a substitute.

We were starting to talk about kids in the next couple years. Then we got a dog and poof! all desire for kids is gone! I think we just wanted something to take care of and nurture. We're still young, so who knows what the future will bring, but for now our puppy is enough.

We wanted some companionship in our home so we adopted kittes. I'm reluctant to connect desire for pets with desire for kids. I think having a pet can open your eyes to just how much monumentally more time, energy, worry, and love would go into raising a child. It's eye-opening, and probably a wise (but not necessarily required) step on the way to having kids. But it can also make you realize that a pet may be enough for you at your current stage in life (or forever).

I only got my kitty because when I moved out I NEEDED an animal! I grew up with at least 3 aniamls aroudn me all my life and it was tough not having one! So i got my kitten :)
