The Scoop: Blue Buffalo Recalls Selected Dry Dog Foods

For dogs that usually find Blue Buffalo kibble in their bowls (and the owners that put it there), consumers take note. Blue Buffalo company recalled certain packages of its Wilderness Chicken, Basics Salmon, and Large Breed Adult Chicken dry dog foods sold under the "Blue" brand, which have the potential to contain excessive levels of vitamin D.

While not as dangerous as salmonella, it is risky to expose a pet to too much of this nutrient. Pups reacting to excess amounts may show signs of lethargy or exhibit unusually frequent water consumption and urination.

Things Are Heating Up in This Baby Panda Incubator!

Look how tiny .

Look how tiny . . . but not too tiny to pose! It's like he (or she) is saying, "Aww, geez, another photo?!" This cub was one of two born at the Madrid Zoo on Sept. 7, the first artificial insemination panda twins outside of China!

While the babes are still catching shut-eye these days, they'll soon grow too big for the incubator with all that milk they sip and will one day eat like 30 pounds of bamboo a day!

Welcome to Surf City! Peep Pups Stay Afloat in the Big Blue Sea

Almost four months after the Loews Coronado Bay Resort Surf Dog Competition in Imperial Beach is this annual Surf City Surf Dog one in Huntington.

Almost four months after the Loews Coronado Bay Resort Surf Dog Competition in Imperial Beach is this annual Surf City Surf Dog one in Huntington. The pups look rather advanced as they tackle some tricky waves but all stay safe in brightly colored vests with human spotters always present. This Boston's leap of faith makes me wonder if lil North could actually grasp the whole surfing concept . . . but then I remembered his fear of water. Oh well, pictures will have to be the closest I get to an actual competition.

Playback's a B*@#&?

This case of "he said, she said" has some extra noisy results.

This case of "he said, she said" has some extra noisy results. When a Shih Tzu/Yorkie mix named Buster wouldn't stop barking in Birmingham, England, an incensed neighbor got even by recording the pup's yips to replay for the dog's owner . . . at top volume at 3 a.m.! While Andrew Nicklin said he only did this as retaliation for the dog's barking, Buster's owner, Catherine Farrell, says he intentionally placed a radio by their shared fence to agitate her pooch. Umm, playback's a b*@#&?

I know that yelling at a dog does no good, especially if the pooch isn't responding to your voice, but even as a dog lover, I don't like the barking sound either. Do you think Nicklin's "punishment" fits Buster's "crime," or do his efforts fall on deaf ears?

Do Tell: City Dwellers More Likely to Treat Pets Like Kids Than Country Cousins

Well, considering a pet to be your child isn't a new topic for PetSugar, but this recent study has a special twist!

Well, considering a pet to be your child isn't a new topic for PetSugar, but this recent study has a special twist! A professor at Indiana University found that your furry friend's family status can come from where you currently reside.

David Blouin, an assistant professor in the sociology and anthropology department at Indiana University, explained:

People who regard pets as children tend to have a city background, for example, while those in rural areas have a more practical attitude. To think of pets as just another animal is not uncommon in rural areas, which makes sense given the utilitarian relationships people in rural areas are more likely to have with a range of different animals — from farm to wild animals.

Whether you live in a bustling city or a quieter village, share your opinion as it relates to your place of residence in the comments below!

Will This Week's Seven Dog Deaths Make You Less Likely to Fly?

I'd imagine it is what every pet owner fears most when handing a pup over to fly as checked baggage or cargo — something happening when a precious pal is out of your hands.

I'd imagine it is what every pet owner fears most when handing a pup over to fly as checked baggage or cargo — something happening when a precious pal is out of your hands. In case you haven't heard the sad news yet, seven dogs recently passed away after landing from an American Airlines flight on Tuesday. With an intended early morning route from Tulsa to Chicago, Flight 851 was delayed for an hour before taking off and, after arrival, several of the dogs in the 14 kennels on board reportedly looked lethargic and seven didn't make it.

This possible outcome causes many to not check a pet, especially during the Summer months where airlines have temperature restrictions. AA prohibits travel over 85 degrees but, with a reported temperature of 86 at 7 a.m., it's possible that this was under that limit when the animals were handed over.
