In addition to keeping paws protected from the cold and chemicals, dog booties have a new purpose in Duesseldorf, Germany – protecting pups from pub-related injuries. Because of a high rate of on-the-job injuries, all 20 police dogs are being trained to walk in plastic fiber shoes to protect them from the broken beer bottles. Even with street cleaning, the little pieces of glass get caught in the cobblestones, deeply pierce paw pads, and bring crime fighting to a bloody halt. These look like a very secure cinching, velcro-topped version . . . once you get them on, that is. What's better yet, the force didn't choose just any old shoes – the dogs' booties were ordered in blue to match the officers' uniforms. How thoughtful!
